"Every time I've seen a production of Hedwig it's been in a small house that sat 100-150 people."
the Jane sat 300 and did very well!
" and it isn't a show or subject matter for a broad audience. "
You'd be surprised how broad the audience was. I know I was!

So many anti-NPH trolls in here. "Get out and stay out!"
Hedwig is a character whom the audience roots for. He' s a likeable, self deprecating guy who lived a rough life. You feel warm towards him. I just don't feel that way about Neil.
He may be able to perform the part as it is on paper, but I don't feel like he has that quality. At least not for me.. That's why I'm disappointed in the casting.
My closing night gift. It ran for 857 performances

You should give it to NPH and then have him take a picture and post it on here. That will bring out the haters.

So we are haters cause we don't think NPH is right for a part? Yeah cause that says so much about how we think of him as a person..

Headband, I don't mean to be unfriendly, but DAMN you're bossy for someone who registered here 21 days ago!
How 'bout you just tell us what you think without telling everyone what they can post and how they need to feel?
(For the record, I think NPH is terrific and absolutely sympathetic when he wants to be. I'd love to see his take on Hedwig!)

I'm in the camp that's very excited to see how this goes!
I'm in the camp that feels that people who are "perfect" for the part are usually the most boring in the end. Give me unconventional/unexpected/surprising casting any day. That's the kind of casting that leads to exciting theatre.
I'm a fan of NPH. Loved him in Assassins. But I admit my first reaction to this news was that he is one of the last people I'd expect in this part. But why on earth would I want them to cast someone who's going to deliver exactly what I've already seen and expect from the role? How is that going to make exciting theatre?
I'm looking forward to this.
art scallion, I guess I'm coming from a different point of view. I'm so familiar with the character of Hedwig, and most of the actors who were "perfect for the role" were the reason I continued to love the show.
I would rather not see an actor who doesn't embody Hedwig's persona. In other words, I want him to be the him that I know and love. Perhaps I'm too close to the show, but I did say let's wait and see about NPH. I'm just a skeptic about this.
Jane I see your point. I think I would probably feel the same way about certain shows I have a particular attachment to.
ps...I like the way you separated the art from the scallion, like it's a first and last name.

Gaveston - that's a line from a song in 9 TO 5, not a direct order from me. Move on!!
I just don't get how this announcement has become so polarizing in both directions. When was the last time BWW reacted so viscerally to a casting decision? I'm sure it was recent but I can't remember.
HAHAHA, when you put it that way, Mr. Scallion, it IS funny. I'm so lazy I type everyone's name the way I thought it was typed without going back to check.
This thread needs a big block of cheese...

I love it! And I think it's because Hedwig is lovable, the whole show is lovable, and people feel strongly about it. Protective, in a way. They don't want it ruined by what they consider is the wrong casting.

I totally get this. It fuels a discussion. What I have a problem is people being disrespectful to each other in the process. There's totally no need for that.

True, Jane. Very true. I guess I never thought of HEDWIG being such a "protected" show by many in the community but it actually makes sense the more I think about it

The last time casting was announced for a Broadway musical.

Answer kad's question.
Isn't it always weird when someone who posts here...posts here?

Anyway...lets get back on subject shall we? I think this is going to be a hit or miss. This could be another Kate finernan situation or the results could be spectacular. I'm guessing it will be a Kate situation.
I love Doogie. I loved Hedwig in its very different early form at the Pyramid Club, and then it's somewhat more commercial version at the Jane (a bit less fun, less wild, but definitely more commercial).
I'm not one to see the same shows over and over; I rarely even watch re-runs. So I'll pass on this.
But I wish good luck to all involved. I look forward to Harris creating a new role of his own.
