Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 1/1/17

I'm pretty sure, but not positive about the three 3 $Ms. With 5 fewer shows, gross is up around $6M, with a corresponding average ticket price. Lots of tourist willing to spend (I stayed away). Next week will be back to reality, and I'll be back as well.

btw I'm happy for A Bronx Tale. I loved that show when I saw it at the Paper Mill.

Like that one poster said, it just means ticket prices are going up every year.

A Bronx Tale has continued to be such a surprise! I haven't seen it yet but it's always great to have new shows doing well!

So happy for the Color Purple!! It's final week seems to be selling very well, too.

And IN TRANSIT needs to go. If that's the best they're going to do, it's time to close the doors.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I think since it's a familiar story, the tourist trade was on board. It also may benefit from many other shows closing since there's not many shows to see from Jan-Feb. I saw this at Papermill and while I enjoyed it, I did not think it was Broadway ready. Hopefully they made some changes and it has a successful run.

The only review of a show that matters is your own.

Glad to have been in town for this awesomely successful week! It's worth noting that Nathan Lane was out of The Front Page for several performances, including the one I attended. Of course, as the box office attendant was going down line announcing his absence and ticket options, I heard more than one party say, "Who's Nathan Lane?" Looks like they were there for Slattery and Goodman, who were excellent. I would like to know, though, if we know why Lane missed performances. I assume illness but was wondering if there was more info. FWIW, Michael McGrath was a nice surprise and supremely entertaining!

Lane was out at my performance too. I kind of expected it, I knew he was out the night before. Not sure if it impacted sales with all the other stars though, theater was pretty filled

Groban??? The multi platinum recording artist who has toured the world? And is playing in one of THIS seasons hit Broadway shows?

Prices are higher now and this is mostly the holiday bump. Let's see how good the numbers for many shows are in the next week or two when tourist are not in NYC as much.

Thanks for letting me know...I had no idea, maybe it was some other Josh in another show...I did hear he was in a show, but I am not a big fan so I didn't even think of him.

Is he out a lot? I'm watching the show Sat evening and Lane was literally the only reason I bought the tix. Would resell and go watch The Present if he'd supposed to be out again.

Yes, it seems that even Josh Grisetti gets more chatter here than Groban usually. (I admit that Groban is one of those lowbrow performers who is just not on my radar, like Bocelli, Brickman, or Bublé.)

Is he out a lot? I'm watching the show Sat evening and Lane was literally the only reason I bought the tix. Would resell and go watch The Present if he'd supposed to be out again.

I wouldn't say he's out "a lot", I mean he's a huge draw for the show, he can't just take off when he wants. He was gone for at least 3 performances last week, I have no idea when he came back, but it sounds like he was out a while. I think that it's just an illness, and he will most likely be fine for your show.

Re: my post referring to "Josh" Groban by his first name---I wrote "Was that why their attendance was down" and there was literally one single Broadway show which experienced a drop in attendance. If that wasn't explicit enough, I can't help you.

I sometimes feel like typing in 'Josh who', or whoevever as many of the performers mentioned here I've never heard of.

It's not worth a post to make a complete idiot of myself and ask that question so if interested just try to google and find out.

I know who Josh is but would have no idea what he sounds like and have no interest in finding out[not into beards---how shallow is that !].

This was probably a waste of a post but always look forward to comments like----'Wow!! Bad week for ??' each week on grosses thread. Cynical but amusing.

The last time I was in NYC was May 2015, specifically to see Fun Home. Walking in I noticed Lin Manuel Miranda picking up tickets. I had made a point of hooking up with a cousin who is about 30 years younger. As he was being seated I mentioned , there's the guy who wrote and starred in Hamilton and In The Heights, she had no clue, a minute later she nudges me as Groban is sitting down, there is Josh Groban. I had no clue. So yeah, Josh seems insufficient.
