At least American Idiot had a nearly 100k bump in grosses compared to the week before Billie Joe was in the cast.
I was there Saturday afternoon, the balcony was closed off and the mezzanine only looked about 60% full, sadly.
ETA- Million Dollar Quartet had an impressive week.

Posted: 10/12/10 at 1:23pmMillion Dollar Quartet actually had its third best week ever. The show has never done THAT well, but looking at the grosses, it seems to be building through this typically slow season. Which I don't understand at all. Is it building through word of mouth? I thought it would be long gone by now, but...now I wonder if it has a lot more life in it than I expected.

I still don't see a reason why MDQ would close in January. Even with a 65% average capacity, the show is making money, even in the dead months of September & October. Same goes to Next to Normal. I say keep both shows open and see how they manage during the winter.
And kudos to Memphis for it's first millon dollar week!! And glad to see La Cage still making money.

"I originally thought that "Promises, Promises" and "Mamma Mia" got some boosts due to the fact it was Beth Leavel and Katie Fierrian's last weeks, but then I rememebered that it was a holiday weekend."
Well obviously. Beth Leavel and Katie FINNERAN aren't huge box office draws in the first place.

Because a lot of shows end up closing right after the New Year. Even if they aren't seemingly doing horrible now, sometimes it is in the best interest of the show to close after the holidays. Why wait for a show to do horribly for it to close?
Next to Normal had a healthy run and was able to recoup its investment. Even so, this show doesn't have the huge tourist draw that shows like Chicago and Phantom of the Opera have. It makes sense to close. Not to mention, there is still the national tour. This has been the case for many other shows that have closed. If we kept every one of them open, then there would be no theaters left for new shows to come to Broadway.
And, well, in the case of Million Dollar Quartet, I couldn't find anything about the show recouping, and I'm not sure how close it is to doing so. If it doesn't have the numbers now, do you honestly think it will after the New Year? Perhaps advance sales don't look so great. Look how the show is performing against its gross potential: https://www.broadwayworld.com/grossesshow.cfm?show=MILLION%20DOLLAR%20QUARTET
There's many reasons why producers will choose to close the show. Just because something appears to be doing good business now doesn't mean it is a reason to stay open. You really have to think about everything in the long term.

Well said millie. I can't believe anyone would honestly type that and not in a sarcastic way.
Althought they are loved in the theatre community, they are not BO draws.

This is why I couldn't understand how BJA stepping in for one week was so great for the show itself. It was great for a week which is a drop in the bucket. If you average out the run including the week, there isn't much of an overal difference. If they are only going to do well at the box office by putting in a ringer....they don't have much of a chance of success.
I'm sure it was fun, and many reports spoke highly of his performance -- but its a gimmick.
