Sorry all, didn't see the stuff from last week that would completely explain it, but I'll go check it out. I just recalled the NYT article talking about how it was $68.5 mil to get it here, and it's now grossed $69 total.

What were Come From Away's grosses like during previews last year? I know it had good word of mouth within the theatre community based on positive out of town reviews, but with no star and no famous creators, I feel like it found its real following amongst the general public solely from broader word of mouth, great reviews, and possibly talk show/Tony performances.
Context: I'm really hoping that this can happen for The Prom. Crossing my fingers that the reviews on Thursday are raves.

They were excellent from the outset, because there was so much advance press about it. You can actually see the history of every show's grosses by clicking on the show when looking at the weekly grosses. Every week of Phantom and Chicago is listed, with summarized annual grosses. That is why I have previously posted that Chicago is very likely going to haver its highest grossing year to date; however, since operating costs have gone up -- presumably significantly -- over the past 20 years, I don't know what that means in terms of weekly profitability, i.e.,how much cushion does it have if yearly grosses go down by, say, even 10%.

It’s all opinion and supposition, but I agree with demondelaplace. I actually really liked Waitress, but I think TBV has a stronger book and music than Waitress and much stronger book/music than CFA. Also, I think it’s a mistake to look at box office as the only predictor or even a reliable omen to Tony wins. TBV won multiple Tony awards which would indicate that it was not merely a matter of the voters holding their noses and voting for TBV for the top award.

You are correct it is all opinion. But, I am not going by box office success. Come From Away is far superior to TBV in my (and other's opinion).
But it is all good. They are all great musicals and I am glad that audiences are enjoying (and being inspired) by the productions.

Are we going to be hearing CFA fans rematching it with every Best Musical from here on out for years. It's pointless and true of all awards: you know how many Tony/Oscar/Grammy/anything nominees who could've won in a different year there are? CFA lost Best Musical the year it was eligible. Let it go.

re the $69.5mil...
That figure includes the production cost and also the amount spent by the landlord getting the prior tenant to the curb, and renovating. So the actual recoupment target is apparently somewhat over half that, a number still not achieved, but not that far off I would think.

Yes, just like how we'll hear "The fact that Come From Away is still doing amazing... makes me smile" every week. It's a constant, at this point.
