bad week
poor American Idiot
It was a bad week. Hopefully things can only go up next week!
I've always wondered how shows can have a capacity of over 100% like Merchant this week. Anyone care to enlighten me?
^ I'm assuming standing room does that.
That makes a lot of sense. Didn't realize Merchant had standing room!

Blech.
They need to put AI out of its misery already.
No, it's not standing room. It's the sale of premium tickets.
Sold premium tickets significantly raise a show's gross, it doesn't have an effect on its attendance.
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but I just don't understand why American Idiot hasn't posted a closing notice yet. I don't even know how they've managed to hold on this long.
Is it bad that I hope, if American Idiot closes, that Encores! Bells are Ringing to go into the St. James? It's really a dumb idea, seeing as Kathleen Marshall is already booked on Anything Goes and Finian's Rainbow (an Encores transfer to the St. James) only ran for about three months. I will, however, keep dreaming the impossible dream.

"Sold premium tickets significantly raise a show's gross, it doesn't have an effect on its attendance."
That's not the issue. The original question asked how a show could exceed 100% of capacity. The answer is that capacity is based on the face value of the ticket (e.g. $147.00), and not the sale price of that ticket at a premium (say $350.00). That's how popular shows sell over 100% of gross capacity. It has little or nothing to do with standing room.
I answered the question assuming that CockeyedOptimist2
was referring to seating capacity.
Yes, I was referring to seating capacity too.
They weren't referring to its gross percentage, they are asking about how they got more than 100 percent of butts in seats you stupid idiot!
Just to clarify, yes I was asking about seating capacity. But I am glad to have both questions answered! Thanks, all!
@wdwfreak
Well, when Merchant shows 103% of gross capacity, it's referring to dollars, not seats or attendance, so I'm not the stupid idiot, idiot.
"Capacity" refers to the amount of people in the theatre not $$$$, though. I think it's just a misunderstanding..
But he was talking about the attendance percentage, not the gross percentage.
Wow, things can get snippy here so quickly. Forgive the apparently unclear question that caused this argument.
I'm curious to know how it only played 5 shows last week. Or am I missing something about the schedule? Too many things have opened recently, and it is hard to keep them all straight.
That looks like it might be a typo, but maybe they were only scheduled for 5?
I don't think it's a typo...the gross, total seats etc.. are all consistent with there only being 5 performances.
Maybe they took a lighter week last week in order to add in performances this week for Thanksgiving? That sounds plausible.
Edit: Nope, that's not it- they have the normal 7 performances next week.
