9 to 5 better pray for Tonys.

9 to 5 will survive on bad reviews.
And I'm worried about In The Heights.

Ouch
Pretty bad week
Ouch for Irena's Vow, Desire, August, Joe Turner
And
WHEN IS REASONS GOING TO CLOSE? I'm not saying that b/c I think it's a bad show but I truely don't see how with these low numbers it is still open.
Also August
I'm hoping all of these will hold out untill the Tony's

What is the weekly cut for In The Heights?
This is a bad time of the year, spring break is over and it's not the summer yet. Numbers will pick up soon.

Yowza...
Times is hard.
Times is haaarrrd.
While it's probably not what the box offices prefer to sell, just a heads-up to students: When grosses plummet (like this) it's almost a sure-fire-way to grab a student discount ticket and be placed in the orchestra. Just ask for the "best that they got" and chances are, they'll fill you into prime seats.

Posted: 5/4/09 at 3:43pmAre you joking, CS? In the Hieghts has been doing better than most shows on Broadway. One bad week won't kill it.

Wow, I'm surprised at Exit the King. Tough week for a lot of shows.
People were saying that Next to Normal had full houses (either sold out/close to sold out) Thurs-Sat. I got my hopes up thinking the attendance would be much better.
9 to 5 has had amazing attendance, but perhaps because of comps for opening night and for previews, their ticket prices and grosses aren't that high.

Posted: 5/4/09 at 3:54pmBIG drop for Joe Turner. Gosh, with all the great revivals opening up lately, it seems a few of them are getting overlooked, despite the quality.

What a terrible week.
It's looking like we all thought it would...N2N is going to have to win Best Musical to make any kind of profit back...and that's just not gonna happen.

Posted: 5/4/09 at 3:56pmI don't think 9 to 5 is doing that bad. It had good attendance, and the gross did go up, not by a lot though. I think it will do very well in the summer.

how is August & Avenue Q still staying open?? They haven't had a good week in a long time.
Keep up those great numbers, Hair!!

Wasn't there a school break recently that might account for a drop since classes returned or am I mistaken? There is lots to choose from too, especially for plays, and people are cutting back so shows are gonna hurt.
Regarding 9 to 5, I try to stay positive by remembering there were positive aspects to the reviews, which were genuinely mixed, rather than painting them with a broad brush. Of course, it's not what would be hoped for in this or any economy, but it's something. The reader reviews on the NY Times page are in large disagreement with Brantley... I think the word of mouth will definitely be beneficial, though it's anybody's guess if it'll be enough or how long it may take to get stronger.

Irena's Vow will probably announce it's closing soon... it won't get nominated for Best Play and if the precursors are any indication, Feldshuh may get overlooked as well. Those numbers are awful.
And I also don't understand how The 39 Steps is hanging on... it's not even filling half of the smallest Broadway theatre.
9 to 5 will be fine. It managed to increase in both gross and attendance during its opening week, when most shows see a decline. It doesn't need raves to be popular.

Posted: 5/4/09 at 4:45pmThe 39 Steps just two weeks ago was in the $225,000-$250,000 range at 80-90% capacity. Which means it rises and falls depending upon when tourists are in town, like any other long-running show. When it has a soft week, as it did last week, its losses are minimal. So a show like that will just keep expenses down in a time like this and then benefit from Memorial Day to Labor Day, when tourists return. It's a show that I think is in for the long haul and I think its fortunes will be back on the rise again in about 2-3 weeks.

Come oooon Tony people, do the right thing! Billy Elliot doesn't NEED it. Next to Normal does. Help out the little guy!

Does anyone else find the N2N numbers encouraging? At least the numbers went up!

Posted: 5/4/09 at 5:20pmIf you think about it, N2N isn't a very expensive show to run AT ALL compared to shows like wicked or the lion king. The nut for N2N can't be all that large considering the orchestra can't have any more than 6 people and there are only 6 actors, a few understudies and minimal crew members. Also grosses are deceiving, the real number to look at is capacity. The Booth is one of the smallest on Bway.
#24re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/3
Posted: 5/4/09 at 8:01pmI honeslty wouldn't be surprised if N2N is breaking even at this point...
