Brutal number for Hair's start, but not unexpected since they have been discounting like crazy!
Nice to see Normal Heart close with a bang!
I remember not too long ago when it was impressive for a show to hit the million dollar mark, now there are a few there that have almost hit 2 mil.
BOM, top ticket price $477, YOWZA! What a hit!
I honestly don't think HAIR is going to sell well. It had little to no interest when it closed and they are getting a late start for the summer. They aren't going to make any money off the rabid fans who do lottery. Those were the only people clamoring for a return.
Wow, what happened to HOW TO SUCEED? Was Daniel Radcliffe not in the show this week for Harry Potter or something?
^ they went on a brief hiatus so Radcliffe could promote Harry Potter.

It's unfortunate that "Sister Act" is not having extremley strong grosses. If they drop drastically, then Andrew Llyod Webber might want to bring "The Wizard of Oz" to the Broadway Theatre just like he at the London Palladium.
Ouch PRISCILLA!
HAIR has been heavily discounted and is on TDF for every performance for the remainder of July into August. Even at those rates, if it sells barely half of the tickets/house...I can see it being gone really quickly.
(The tour is going to lose major money on Broadway if grosses/capacities remain like this).
Why did they even bring it back? Everyone who wanted to see it already has--concert and full run in the park, plus a 16-month run on Broadway. And both with far superior casts, overall.
Hair closed as the audience dried up. No clue why they brought it back.
It is a shame Siter Act is struggling. Waiting for the inevitable discount or TDF appearance for Priscilla . Both had good pedigrees so no reason other than the economy why they are slowing dying.
With this technically being a stop on the HAIR tour, would it/could it close? Don't they have more stops in the fall? Would the tour suddenly go on a hiatus?
I believe the tour heads back out to the west coast after this. This was supposed to be their hiatus.

The NYC stop may be their demise if these grosses continue which I imagine they will....NY audiences don't want to see a tour on Broadway. Foolish move to bring it back.....As someone mentioned, The Cirque show and Spidey are taking away business from other shows and will probably be the cause of their demise as well- Priscilla, Sister, Catch, Addams.....if these shows last the summer, September will not be kind to them.

^ from hows it been explained the stop was in the budget meaning they arent losing as much as you think.........

You mean the producers expected to lose a few million and comp most of the tickets? The cast must just love playing to 800 people a night in a 1700 seat theater.
Poor Hair, great show but it made no sense in it coming back.
Well done to Spidey, 3 weeks in a row since opening its had great numbers.
So happy to see THE NORMAL HEART have such strong grosses in it's final weeks!
Re: Hair, I gather that it cost less to book a Broadway house for the summer than it would to have put the entire company on hiatus for that long. I don't know the math, but that's the story.

That makes no sense- they still have to pay rent (they are probably getting a good deal), stagehands, advertising, etc. Would have been much cheaper to close it for 8 weeks which I believe is allowed for Equity, pay everyone unemployment, then regroup and restart the tour. But I am not producing it so what do I know.

I find the big numbers for Spiderman depressing. If this is what is going to pass for musical theatre in the future, I guess the nail has been driven into the coffin. Very sad.
I'm very glad Hair came back because I didn't get to see it before. It's such an incredible show and I wish it sold better. It was practically empty when I went, and there were people who left at intermission.

spider-man is a disgrace. I, for one, would rather have into the woods playing in the foxwoods for the next sixteen years. theatuh.
I think people are missing the point in regards to HAIR. I don't think ANYONE assumed the show would be a big, sell-out hit in that theatre. That theatre is HUGE. Maybe in the big budget breakdown they assumed they'd only be selling half of that. I'm sure they got a great deal on the rent, and maybe the cast are still on their tour contracts which means they aren't getting what a normal Broadway Equity minimum would be. I wonder if the tour is putting up cast members who did not have housing in NYC.
I think it's an equity rule that while they are playing in a Broadway theatre, they have Broadway contracts. I'm fairly certain that they dropped their tour contracts for this engagement and got Broadway ones.
Eh I'm not so sure. It's all pretty crazy these days with the amount of different contracts that can be had. Like Roundabout and Lincoln Center don't run on the same contracts as a show like Wicked would.
