Seems pretty consistent, End of the Rainbow needs to close, it's amazing it's still running . Newsies and Once are both doing great, and are so close in numbers that I wouldnt consider the two shows having much competition. Great week

I cannot understand the constant comparison between Once and Newsies. Can't we just be happy that both are doing great business?

There's a nice little increase for "Chicago." I wonder who's coming in as "Velma" when Amra Faye Wright leaves for the resumption of the national tour and then on to Japan. Leigh Zimmerman hasn't played "Velma" in quite a while. She played "Go To Hell Kitty" at the start of the current revival. Leigh reminds me of Julie Newmar. It's unfortunate that "End of The Rainbow" is struggling so. It is amazing that "Rainbow" has managed to survive in the face of very low box office. The numbers for "Lion King" are out of this world! from RC in Austin, Texas
P.S. from "Chicago the Musical" on Facebook: Terra C MacLeod will be "Velma" from July 31 -- August 5th.

"Once is in a smaller space. Much easier to "do better"."
Yes and no. Obviously a show in a smaller space has the advantage of being able to get its capacity percentage higher faster than a larger theatre, but clearly people are willing to pay more for Once than they are for Newsies, as Once had both a higher gross and a higher average ticket price.
And I agree with your sentiment, dramamama. I don't understand why people here have decided that Once and Newsies are bitter rivals that must be pitted against each other. It's not like the producers of either show have come forward and said "we hate that show and will do everything in our power to prove that we are better."

Posted: 7/30/12 at 5:50pmWhen you realise Once's ticket price is $150 a ticket, 30% off is still $105.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 6:04pmNot sure I agree with the pricing strategy, but BDN is right in that Once jacked up their ticket prices insanely high after the Tony win so the 30% TKTS discount is still very expensive. I don't think it will work long term as their advance sales will likely start to slump, but as of now, their presence at TKTS doesn't mean the show is doing badly at all.

How long till Bring It On announces its extending through the holidays?!??
Even if the average ticket price is only $47 they are still making 60% of their possible profit, which is great especially when most thought it would be DOA.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:37pmThat's because they are actually selling the preview tix at a reduced price. I think someone posted the full price for the preview tix was approx 79 bucks. That's what the gross and potential are based on -- what they are currently selling those tickets for -- not what they COULD be selling them for. (Or might be after opening.)
#14Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/29/12
Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:43pmYeah, that isn't going to cut it long term. I don't see people spending the big money on premium tickets that are needed to keep shows afloat for this one, especially in such a big theatre. I guess we'll see what happens after opening, but I doubt it extends.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 7:50pmWell BIO's tour is supposed to resume in January, so there is really no "long term", the goal for its Broadway leg was to give publicity to the tour and hope for some good New York reviews.

"but clearly people are willing to pay more for Once than they are for Newsies, as Once had both a higher gross and a higher average ticket price."
People aren't willing to pay more to see ONCE, they HAVE to. ONCE is offering no discounts except for the 30% off at TKTS when they haven't sold out. Their premium tickets are $275 - almost $100 more than NEWSIES, which is selling out practically every single night without sending tickets to TKTS.
In short, I don't see ONCE's huge prices lasting after the summer. I'm glad I bought my tickets before the nominations came out and saw the show for $79 from great seats.

Well no one is FORCING them to see Once. They are choosing to and are WILLING to pay the higher price.

Posted: 7/30/12 at 9:49pmWell, of course. What I meant was they have to pay that or don't see it. Tourists will give into the hype and pay the high price to see the show that one the Tony Award. All I meant was that Newsies tickets are significantly cheaper and it is doing just as well, oftentimes better (not that I want this to sound like I am having the two shows compete, this post was just in response to another post comparing the two shows).

Posted: 7/30/12 at 9:59pmBoth Newsies and Once are doing very well and both sellouts, does Newsies do SRO as their capacity is over 100% which is the case for Book of Mormon and also Harvey. As I mentioned before, Harvey would easily break $1m if it was a commericial production.

"DTP execs have told cast members that they would like to get anther 5 years out of POPPINS,"
Not that I think Mary Poppins is in danger of a sudden closing, but what the producers tell cast members is not always a reliable source of information. Dreamworks was telling the cast of Shrek that they would be keeping the show open until the fourth Shrek movie came out right up until they actually posted the closing notice, which was well before that movie was released. A smart producer will do all they can to keep up morale of a company, even if it means outright lying about their plans for closing a show. (Again, I'm not saying that Disney is currently misleading their cast, but it is not out of the realm of possibility)
