Out of curiosity, why do you think The Outsiders is so political? It obviously doesn't address electoral politics, and I don't think it really addresses any hot-button modern political issues (in fact, the change from how Dally dies in the novel seems aimed at avoiding just such an issue). Maybe it's "political" in the sense of expressing an opinion about how people should relate fairly to each other, but that definition of the term is so broad as to almost be vacuous.

You hush your mouth!!! 😄😄😄
Seriously, though, I cannot see them replacing Roger. He is best buddies with Bob Gale and the other creatives on the show and has been involved since the very first workshop.

People cannot stay with shows forever! Sure, it's a good gig, especially for a guy who hadn't been on Bway for 7 years prior to this, but people get tired of a show, and this is also a major business decision for the show to make. People have to replace their friends on shows all the time. This is show BUSINESS.
But like I said, I don't know how much a casting stunt would actually help the show. We'll see what happens.
Reminder that there are only 25 shows currently playing on Broadway now. There are 16 Broadway theaters currently dark. The Roommate is the next show to start previews beginning August 29. The lack of available shows certainly helps the struggling ones.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
