As long as they can do what the role requires, I am all about some more eye candy.
When they can't.....it's going to be a little peaved. If I wanna see buff guys I will go to the gym!
This isn't new!
When Cole Porter's OUT OF THIS WORLD opened, critics were shocked by the thin costumes worn by the chorus boys and girls. Under the lights they looked like they were made out of tissue paper, and supposedly they left nothing to the imagination.
Sean Connery, a professional body builder, began his acting career when he was cast in the touring production of "South Pacific" in England in the late 1940's.
It's nothing new.

It'd get me into any theatre anytime.
allofmylife, Have you seen the pictures of Sean when he won the "Mr. Scotland" contest?
Words cannot describe the hotness.

Josh Logan would be so proud.
Anyone who has ever been to an audition could have told ya that honey...it's the same way for the girls.
It's the same way in all of show business.
that cools. i hope the upswing of the trend continues. who wants to pay to see ugly people?
here is the Sean Connery pic

It's a bird...
It's a plane...
It's Super-Ficial!
None of this explains why The Ritz was papered regularly.
For a hundred bucks a pop, they better be more than just hot.
the ritz had some SERIOUSLY UGLY people walking around with nothing on, and they had most of the stage time! it would still be running with a all-hottie cast.
But those muscles! They're the best marketing tool a dying art form has got!
The article has the credibility of the National Enquirer.
There are strip clubs you can go to if you're dying to see naked muscle men.
LEAVE BROADWAY ALOOONEEE!
No kidding, blaxx, and they're a lot cheaper. And Internet porn is free. (as was The Ritz and Naked Boys Singing a lot of the time, now that we mention it!)
it is total dying art form. it will go the way of opera in 10 years. even sondheim says it is dead. might as well have some oiled up hotties to look at on the march to the cemetery.
i couldnt disagree more. sure, if the leading man is supposed to be attractive, cast someone hot. but do we really need talentless eye candy walking around up there? no. that is what a lot of TV shows are for. broadway is for real talent, and if the "hotties" dont have it, i am beyond not interested.

Dimple-cheeked, well-muscled actor Mario Lopez (Saved By the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas) danced his way into America's hearts
...I'm sorry, but the specificity of that Saved by the Bell credit? Hilarious.
But, really, this doesn't seem like much of a story. More just an excuse to write an article about men with nice bodies. Which is fair, I suppose.

nitwit, your username fits you perfectly. How can anyone be a member of this board and say you don't want to pay to see ugly people? I don't give a flying piece of cow dung what the heck they look like - as long as the performance they deliver is brilliant.

yeah yeah yeah. if everyone realized that being a performer, in NY, means being a QUADRUPLE threat then we wouldn't have this problem. Sing. Act. Dance. LOOK GOOD!
Tulita, I have met Sean several times. He's still in pretty good (Zardoz) shape. I'll take your word on the hottness.
This is nothing new.
Back in the days of Grecian Drama, I'm sure that the first actor to step out of the chorus had a terrific ass.
(And Sean Connery is old enough to be my father and I would still TOTALLY do him!)
I just thought I should say that this thread is producing some AMAZING quotes.
I agree with DaintyJack...regardless of the ideals people cling to, looks DO matter. They matter a lot, especially in the entertainment industry.

..."LEAVE BROADWAY ALOOONEEE!"
blaxx****YEAH!!!
And who says that a "geekish" looking lead is not sexy...? I find them hotter that the beefcakes (of course, providing that they deliver a solid performance as well...).
I had a need to come back and edit----by "solid performance", I meant "onstage", as acting?... :}
