So, my family is coming to NY this winter before Christmas. We want to know which shows we have to see.
We have tickets to Spiderman, as we love Julie Taymor. But, we're not sure which other ones to see.
Is Women worth it? The cast sounds amazing. Same about Promises. I love Kristen, but is the show that bad?
Thanks for your help. Suggest musicals and plays.

What have you seen and what are the ages of the family?

Elf is very family friendly

I might even split off into halves and take turns on the standby line for ANGELS IN AMERICA. It's absolutely astounding and unmissable and they'll give you two tickets per person on line. That might be too much trouble for a family, though - for me and a friend, it was well worth it.

I love Kristen, but is the show that bad?

It gets worse when you realize the gal you love is actually Kristin not Kristen *gasp*

My son is thirteen and he has seen Ave. Q. We want to see adult themed shows, not ELF or the younger themed shows. We've seen Billy Elliot, In the heights, the lion king, phantom, jersey boys, mary poppins, next to normal, wicked.
We want to know if American Idiot or Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson are worth it. One of us is 17 and loves Green day. Is "WOMEN" worth it.
It sounds fun!

proven crowd pleasers:

Memphis
Promises Promises
Wicked

Consider
American Idiot ( if the crowd likes rock)

Avoid
Women on the Verge- great cast but musical theatre at its worst
In the Heights
La Cage (in my opinion a cheap substandard production)

Definitely check out American Idiot. I honestly think it's one of the best things (maybe the best thing, since Next to Normal's new cast stinks :P) on Broadway right now.

American Idiot is a MUST SEE!!
It's not a typical jukebox musical...Think of it as Green Day's answer to TOMMY.

I loved American Idiot and Memphis. Those would be my recommendations.

Definitely consider American Idiot, especially since one of you is a Green Day fan. I personally didn't enjoy Memphis, but it is considered generally appealing outside the somewhat pretentious community on this board. XD

American Idiot is solid and I thoroughly enjoyed myself at La Cage. Also consider The Scottsboro Boys.

Of all of the possible "must sees", I would suggest that "A Little Night Music" would be number one. The performance of Bernadette Peters is one for the ages, it is unforgettable, something that will stay with you forever.

I personally hated American Idiot. And I wouldn't say, at all, that the new cast of Next to Normal 'stinks'. Far from it, actually. I rather enjoyed La Cage, and would definitely recommend both In the Heights and A Little Night Music.

n2nbaby,

I don't know if your one of those OBC crazies, but I think that the new cast is just as good but certainly not better then the OBC.

For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.

My second Broadway trip of 2010 comes to a close tonight. During which I've seen

Next to Normal (Third time at the show, first with new cast)
A Little Night Music (Twice with Bernadette)
Billy Elliot
Promises, Promises
Memphis
Lend Me a Tenor *closed*
La Cage (Twice)
Our Town *closed*
Freud's Last Session *closing today*
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Time Stands Still
Merchant of Venice
and Scottsboro Boys

The only two I would stay away from are Memphis and Women on the Verge... Great disappointments. I'm a huge Next to Normal fan, and I greatly enjoyed Promises and La Cage. If you have yet to see Bernadette in Night Music, you need to see that before the show closes. I did just see Women on the Verge, TIme Stands Still, Merchant of Venice, and Scottsboro Boys this weekend so throes are fresher in my mind. Scottsboro Boys was profound, fantastic theater and I'm so glad I chose to see it. Pacino is magnificent in Merchant of Venice, and the cast of Time Stands Still is remarkable. A lot of great things playing right now.

Must Sees would be A Little Night Music, Scottsboro Boys, Next to Normal, Merchant of Venice, and Time Stands Still. Will not be disappointed!
