I've never gone to see the Broadway performances they hold in Bryant Park and I'm planning to go in August since I'll be in the area. In general, what is the experience like? I need to determine if it's really worth it to go or not.
I haven't gone in two years, so things could have changed, but I always enjoyed the performances. They usually have one or two songs from each show, and they sometimes had free giveaways. I think it's definitely worth it, especially considering it's free! If you go on a really hot day you should try to get there early since the shady areas of the park fill up quickly.
When I went a few years ago they had a large area set up with chairs. I went on a day with good weather so I bought a sandwich and got their early so I could get a seat up front, and just had a nice lunch before the performances. They usually have four shows perform, with each show doing 1-2 songs. Though I've seen some shows do 3 songs.
I got there after it started and managed to find "good seats" close to the stage. It can get pretty cramped closer to the stage, but honestly...you can find a good spot. It's pretty lax. Most people are there on their lunch break.
Broadwayfan7...it's located right along 42nd between Grand Central and New Amsterdam Theater...but closer to Grand Central. It's right behind the New York Public Library. Bryantpark.org for exact address.
