Yeah, this weeks numbers are notttt good. I wonder why they aren't releasing show by show anymore?

Assuming the juggernauts are selling out, some shows are likely playing to 50% capacity during the week. There should be a boost this week with schools out.

This is the moment in the down the line PBS documentary where a talking head goes
"Broadway WAS back! But economically speaking, we weren't. We were all scared. But the world had changed. You couldn't ask audiences to pay a premium ticket anymore after what they had been through."

I just saw on Twitter that the capacity % that is being reported includes comp tickets???

That's not new. Capacity was being reported as seats filled not revenue seats pre-covid. It's just that when it is individual shows, you can quickly do the math. When it is an aggregate, it is meaningless. This will all come back to bite the League's marketing geniuses in the a$$. As I have been saying for quite a while, the winter is going to be brutal. The percentages will go up but the volume will be way down for the ?dozen? shows that are able to run.

Yes, because capacity % is a simple calculation of butts in seats.
What they're NOT reporting is gross potential (in $ or %). I think that would be the eye-opening statistic, especially if was broken down per show as it was in the before times.

You people don’t want to hear it but the stringent mask rules are destroying Broadway - people in their 30s are not shaking in their boots over Covid - it’s bad enough Nyc is one of the only places in the country with vaccine requirements to go into a concert - show - restaurant- to force those to wear masks in addition is a turn off to many normal people - you should have the freedom to wear one if you are immune compromised - entertainment is doing fine all over the country - except NYC - these are the facts - and simple deductive reasoning leads one to draw this conclusion- it is time to end the insanity already - keep this up - there will be no more Broadway- this is most imperative that the next mayor immediately end this madness - Broadway won’t be able to function with 300 people houses on weekends
I have been around the business for 18 years - during blizzards I’ve seen better houses at a Longacre flop ( a theater famous for one flop after another) than what is going on now - Broadway can’t exist on Hamilton and Plaza Suite alone

The mod's just cleaned up this mess, why start it again?
The CDC just cleared 5-11 year olds getting vaxxed so If expect a lot of holiday travel reservations to start happening now.

Because this is the reason why the circuit is dead and it’s relevant
I've heard from a reputable source that houses are averaging about 15% sold seats right now.

Your "source" sucks.

Sorry Tag but that's just really silly. Could there be one house that is averaging 15%? Sure, and that's something we' sometimes saw pre-covid. You need a better source.

To give cover to a lot of producers. Nobody wants it easily known their shows are playing to empty houses and bleeding money.
But, frankly, without a show-by-show breakdown, I think these numbers are next to useless. We can mostly just assume that a limited number of decently-performing shows are basically boosting the average.
I think a lot of producers will be looking over at The Music Man, which is selling out even with its exorbitant ticket highs, for cues for how to proceed (ie- big names, familiar material).

The numbers are not thought to be useless by their "creators" (and I put that in quotes simply to say that the numbers we are getting are "manufactured," not in the sense that they are not correct for what they are but that they are only useful to short-sighted marketing types. As I said, this entire strategy is going to blow up in their faces.

I agree they are, as they always have, but the problem is the same as it always was too: it's easier said than done. Jackman can only be in one show at a time. What "a lot of producers" usually end up doing is blowing a lot of money. The timing of TMM is perfect, and those before and after will/would have a rougher go. (And I hate to say it but this little bit of understanding about timing is the lost genius of that ogre who "stepped back."![]()
Now that vaccinated tourists from UK/EU, other countries etc. are allowed to enter USA starting today, hopefully the bway grosses in coming weeks will be better (especially at houses that normally cater to tourists.)
At the same time, I know in West End they're quite lax with the enforcement of wearing masks (when I saw &Juliet last week I'd say roughly 30% of patrons wore masks.) Hopefully patrons will follow the mask rules on Bway.
Just thinking the international lift on vaccinated foreigners will help Broadway/NYC. just in time for the holidays, too.
Broadway grosses chart
This past week's average ticket price was $118.23 compared to the previous week's of $116.93.
As the US has reopened to vaccinated tourists, hopefully grosses will get better. With more people going to Broadway and as the holidays approach, I also hope the actors/theater workers keep testing negative so none of the shows will have to cancel performances.

Although we are now allowed to enter the states again, we sill need to show a negative test even when vaccinated which is off putting/impractical for some people. You can invest time and money in a trip but you won't actually know if you can go until just days before you travel. Or if one of your party tests positive the whole trip is out. Not everyone can plan and travel last minute.
Yes Princeton, one has to be flexible. Travel right now for those disinclined to flexibility is a no-go. When I was in Europe one of my travel mates got "stuck" (at his own expense) due to a positive test.

I had to show a vaccination card and wear a mask when I saw Tootsie in Orlando, Sunday. It was in a 2700 plus theatre and close to 95% capacity.
