We're talking about C&L vs. Hairspray as though people are going to have to CHOOSE to see one over the other this weekend, but do you really see the demographics as being the same for both films?
I don't know that C&L is necessarily going to be taking business away from Hairspray. The typical guy who would go see an Adam Sandler comedy like C&L most likely isn't going to want to see Hairspray...and conversely, I don't really see all the tween girls who are going to be Hairspray's bread-and-butter flocking to see C&L.

I'm trying to get my sister to see Hairspray tonight.
Bad news--she said she would go--and then she remembered Chuck adn Larry, and now is begging to go see that. I told her I refuse to support it over Hairspray opening weekend. Maybe another weekend. I'm going to force her to see Hairspray. I said she can go see Chuck and Larry and I'll go see Hairspray again if we must.

Why would anyone "beg" to go see C&L?
*shakes head*
I think we also have to take into account that a chunk of Hairspray's audience won't see it until next week thanks to a certain boy wizard.
Alot of people I know are making it the ultimate Friday night by seeing a late showing of Hairspray, and then going to the book store to pick up the book. :)
as much as I LOVED Hairspray the past two times I've seen it in this last week, I dont think it's going to do a HUGE box office intake.
IMO I think it will make...maybe...35-40 million TOTAL in its box office life.
It will however have an amazing DVD life
I felt the same way. But I was planning on seeing both (me having a love for Sandler and musicals) but my mom decided she wasn't gonna come back for me after I already ahd my ticket. I guess I'll see it another time this week.
As of now: 10:36 AM
The current most popular standings on MOVIEFONE.com:
1 Hairspray (2007) (PG) 32,286 Views
2 I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (PG-13) 12,384 Views
haha to the person who put they think it will make $30-$40 million tops in total Hmmm im thinking you may be wrong.
I don't follow movies that closely however it seems that some of the most recent ones, "Evan Almighty", "Fantastic Four", etc had big openings then dropped off quickly. I predict the same for "Chuck and Larry".
On the otherhand, I think "Hairspray" will have a longer run due to good word of mouth and have great DVD sales (like Dreamgirls).
Personally I don't think either movie will do as well as expected this weekend. With the 5th Harry Potter movie having just come out and the 7TH AND FINAL BOOK last night, people are going to be hitting the Potter hard. Hairspray will pick up next week.
i saw hairspray and the theater that we went to was completly full this movie is awsome the jokes and one liners were great and the songs and john travolta as edna he was great

OK...I feel this thread is ridiculuos.....I saw both hairspray AND Chuck and Larry. I liked BOTH. I can understand alot of people on this board wanting to see Hairspray.....BUT...to actually care that C and L is doing well and more people wanting to see it is sophmoric. Lets face the facts here,......musicals don't have the same appeal that they did back in the "golden age' of film. Personally...I LOVE musicals....and so does my wife.....but.....people like to LAUGH. This is not a middle America issue.......I am from New York city...I saw the broadway show...so I was glad to see the movie with my wife, and be familiar with the songs...they did a great job...it definately was alot of fun....but if I was going on a date with a girl......I would probably take her to C&L. It has a good spirit...and again.....people want to be entertained..and the fact is ...for movies.....laughter usually wins. I'm happy alot of people want Hairspray to do well.....but don't put down another film just because it's out at the same time...if C&L came out a month after Hairspray...nobody would have started this stupid thread. Funny is funny.....yes...Sandler's film Little Nicky was terrible......but what about 50 First Dates, and The Wedding Singer (NOT the musical)...Sanndler has had some good movies.....Sandler has general appeal.....yes...in cities like NY too.....in fact...remember....he is an SNL alumni....anjd a New Yorker.....so alot of NYC likes him....and Kevin James......The King Of Queens was a popular show....and a funny one too. Yes...I hope Hairspray does well.....but I hope C&L does too. Audiences will pick their poison......let them make their own choices.......both movies have their audience......both movies will do well......LET IT BE.
Its not really about C&L...
If Hairspray opened along side 'The Simpsons Movie' the thread would read "Hairspray vs. Simpsons"
You have to take into context that this is a Broadway board and most people here will be pulling for the underdog, i.e. Hairspray. Not to mention the future of other movie musicals in development will most likely depend on how well Hairspray does at the B.O. It's not a personal affront against C & L.

I know that it's not an attack on C&L....but the thread started with someone actually upset at this.......if it was just about that Hairspray would do well.....great...but the threads is titles Hairspray vs C&L......and some people did put down the film.....THAT'S the part that got me going.......
I love to laugh and be entertained, but you couldn't drag me to see that offensive piece of crap if you paid me.
All I know is as far as the content is concerned, I will judge for myself whether I view it as insulting to the gay community or not. The very premise that is displayed in the commercials, particularly as exemplified by Sandler's character, really just shows that indeed this is a typical buddy comedy - which means jokes concerning how no straight dude ever wants to be seen as gay is a major riot.
So it's made to attract a boatload of insecure teenage boys - but it may not be a bad movie despite that. We'll see.
Feb. 28 - Looped, Feb. 28 - Next to Normal, March 4 - Hair, March 11 - A Little Night Music, March 24 - Time Stands Still, April 6 - La Cage Aux Folles, April 10 - Anyone Can Whistle (City Center), April 10 - Looped, May 9 - Enron, May 15 - A Little Night Music, May 15 - A Behanding In Spokane, May 30 - A Behanding In Spokane, May 30 - A Little Night Music, June 20 - A Little Night Music, June 23 - Red, June 23 - Sondheim on Sondheim, July 13 - A Little Night Music, July 18 - The Grand Manner (Lincoln Center)
I just hate how Adam says 'yucky' when feeling up Jessica Biel.
I touch my girlfriends boobs all the time.
Do your research! :)

this was not an attack against chuck and larry. it was a thread started to see out of the two new movies this week, which do you think will make more money based on what people are seeing out there and based on general demographics across the US. as other posters have stated,...if it were next week, it would read Hairspray vs. Simpsons. in the hopes that a musical would do well.
With a musical doing well in the box office..it can send a message to studio executives out there..that there is an audience for musicals..and it should be more than the occasional one every 3 years kinda thing. I missed the old heydey of having a few musicals come out every year.....
so with sweeney, mamma mia and nine coming up....
it is in hopes that Hairspray does better than Chuck and Larry. but it is in no way atacking C&L.
i havent seen C&L...but looking at all the clips..its something I wouldn't want to go see anyway. I love sandler...but do not like the content the film seems to be about.
(BOAT TRIP with cuba gooding jr and horatio sanz comes to mind)...

The reason why Chuck and Larry would likely be more popular is because they were using sex to sell the movie. I didn't see an add that didn't show jessica's big butt in underwear, or she had the guy squeezing her boobs. So, that's likely why the lines were around the corner vs. Hairspray, hairspray has no sex, just good family fun and the movie with a great message. People would rather see a bad movie with the chance at sneaking a peak then one of the best movies of the year. However, based on the reviews Hairspray is clearly the winner.
