seriously, people behind me had brought a bag of MCDONALDS food (you know the smell) & were unwrapping their hamburgers, eating fries, ALL THROUGH THE SHOW.
its all stuff like that that makes me feel like i cant really assess the show itself fairly.
people openly using their phones, people openly texting, little screens lit up everywhere, & not one usher said a word.
Welcome to the theater - 2008
i'd turn around to the fatties and ask them if they were really THAT hungry? heh
Damn, I'm sorry that happened to you, n69n. I guess this is the type of show that would attract audience members like that though...
Yankee- I am counting on you...so pls dont get carried away by all the wrong reasons!
cutelyricist- I cant respond to you bec. accept pm...I dont have AIM..sorry. send me your e-mail instead...
Yeah- RyToast & I had run-ins wih rude audience at yesterday's matinee of SOUTH PACIFIC, some guy was yelling BRAVO at all the number, somel people were unwrapping their candies during the show and I can hear all the little noise they make with that candy wrapper...a phone even rings during the show...someone even said ...shhhhhh...
We did saw Ethan Hawke though yesterday at the show. Dont wory I am downloading all my pics now and I will post MY 10/10 REPORT ON SOUTH PACIFIC (with stage door photos) special guest...RyToast & Wanna Be A Foster later today.....or tonight... though those two guys have no photos bec. they requested not to be photographed and I always respects my friends' wishes... (I did same thing with Millie_Dillmount & broadwayjim ...when we saw Xanadu... I did not post their photos...I only share it to them privately) .though I have pictures of all the cast....will post later..

musicalmaster703 - You just asked what show to see instead of Cry-Baby. So how did you go to the same show as Norn (n69n)? He saw Cry-Baby.
I think someone asked earlier in the thread...at least for previews there is student rush available, 25 bucks for the front row. I was there last night and I'll pretty much agree with you, although I didn't hate it quite as much. I thought some of the songs were cute and appropriately tongue-in-cheek, although that theme went WAY overboard.
The choreography was definitely the best part of the show, and like I said I thought the songs were alright...it's the book that kills it.
The thing I don't get is why some people are already deciding to change their plans and not see Cry-Baby based on some other peoples' opinions on a first preview.
Bizarre.

without a trace : I'm just curious... why did you hate PASSING STRANGE?
"without a trace : I'm just curious... why did you hate PASSING STRANGE?"
I couldn't relate to it at all and frankly, the show was way over my head. If Stew was trying to get some point across, I didn't get it. I hated the score, the book, the lighting, the actors (minus the mother in the purple dress), the fact that the band was way too loud and I left the theater with a splitting headache. I was shocked at the rave reviews. The only thing I got out of PS was that Stew had gone to Amsterdam to do drugs and have sex parties. We do not need a new musical to tell us that.
...and now back to Cry Baby!
Without A Trace just dont like PASSING STRANGE. He explained it to me , though I love PASSING STRANGE a lot..and my friends tend have different opinions about a certain show...I try to respect what they think...if I see something they post online that I did not like..I would just ignore it (Wat did not do that..I am talking in general sense) specially IF I MET them in person....I wont contradict them and post rude comments about them on a personal level...its just a common courtesy! its like attacking people face to face.. that's actually what I was telling WBaF & Rytoast during our lunch conversation... pm would have been a better option..if your friends post something that really tick you off.. instead of calling them names.. specially if your love ones (like my husband and my sisters) can READ it online..
And these are people that I like, meet them in person, hung out with them and you just happen NOT to like their political inclinations... and I get attacked on all the threads, but its all OKAY now bec. we made up... I hope so...
but what I am trying to drive at is... sometimes my friends will post stuff I dont like ..or wont completely AGREE on you on a certain show I just IGNORE it bec. for me...FRIENDSHIP is more important to me than some threads in the Off-Topic Board...
and yes for the record... I was hurt! though I am ready to MOVE-ON...

I see...
I haven't seen Passing Strange, but it's the only show up now that I really WANT to see, and opinions have been extreme, making it all the more confusing.
but thanks.
and yeah, back to CRY-BABY. h he

You have to take withoutatrace's comments about PS with a grain of salt. He would prefer to have an easy story to comprehend like In the Heights, than trying to understand why Stew went to Europe. (It was not for the drugs and sex parties). Passing Strange is a rock concert/ musical hybrid, and does not try to hide that. That being said, it's not for everyone. Wicked isn't for everyone either though.
A ran into a group of folks with Cry-Baby playbills in their hands as we were leaving N2N last night. So I had to ask what they thought. Unanimous praise, "It was good -- especially the second act."

I would have said something to them - repeatedly
If that did not work, I would ask an usher to remove them. If that did not do anything,I would go to the boxoffice & demand a refund.
dude, barcelona do you just search for posts where someone has said something bad about PS just so you can show up and bash ITH in response? seriously, get a life.
I also saw the first preview last night.
First off, I was so excited that John Waters was sitting about 6 feet next me!
Secondly, I enjoyed the show, not as good as Hairspray (because hHairspray has much more memorable songs!)
The show will get mixed reviews. I thought the direction of the show was great! I loved the chase scenes sort of A LA Funnyh Thing That Happened on the Way to the Forum. Some great performances (especiially Alli! with her perfect comedic timing)And Chester is great in everything I've seen him in (but not featured in the show as much (SHUT UP!) There's still a month left in previews, I'm sure things will get fixed up. I was sad that my favorite Tracy was out of the show last night (Carly J.)
The choreography was a real treat.
All in all. I was very entertained, but certainly NOT bored!
I wouldn't expect big changes between first preview and opening night of a show that had a fairly successful out of town tryout. If they were going to revamp it they would have done so already.
How did this show come in if it was so bad?
I am also appalled by the description of the audience. Why is outside food allowed in a live theatre? They don't even allow it in MOVIE theatres. What next? Pizza delivery in the Mezz? Ordered by someone using their cell during the show?
A cell phone user should be ejected if the phone goes off...particularly if the person ANSWERS it. No exceptions. Period.
ejected and FINED SINCE ITS ACTUALLY ILLEGAL IN NY.
I was there last night and am somewhat angry that I wasted my Saturday evening on Cry-Baby.
I liked the 2nd act more than the first. Alli Mauzey is the best thing in it. The two leads were uncharasmatic. The choreography was good, too. I was kind of wondering why they didn't have bows after the show. It was one group bow and curtain.
To me, none of the songs were memorable. The lyrics somewhat, but for all the wrong reasons. I can't figure out how this show was well received in California.

I fail to understand how anyone could say James Snyder doesn't have much of a voice. Maybe the part's not written to show off his talents the way they should be. Take a listen to the "bare" album... the boy wails, particularly in "Cross."
As for CRY BABY, I see it soon (two weeks), and I love a good flop too (though, we don't know yet if this will flop or succeed... too early). But I'm not looking forward to it. There's not much of a draw for me to see the show.
Oh my! some of my friends here already did not like the show..hmm....
Curtainpulldowner- Did Not Like
Without a Trace- Did Not Like
Dottie D' Luscia- Did Not Like
Norn- Did Not like
I will keep an open mind..But I said before I really DO NOT LIKE the score..like most of you already said...its not as memorable as HAIRSPRAY..exactly what I thought..
Damn! I should just finish my 10/10 Report on SOUTH PACIFIC, instead of participating in this discussion.. lol!

"What next? Pizza delivery in the Mezz?"
I've already had a couple who asked my box office treasurer to order them a pizza to be delivered during the intermission of the show.
were they promptly executed jane?
