I was there tonight and I absolutely loved it. He does a really nice mix of showtunes and standards, and he did a fantastic medley of Peter Allen songs, complete with solid gold outfit. He also did a really lovely tribute to Australia and talked about the time he spent living/working with Aboriginal people, and there were 3 Aboriginal performers who came out during that and performed onstage with him.
He also sang "Soliloquy" from Carousel as the act 1 closer, which basically cemented in my mind that he needs to play Billy Bigelow in a full production of that show, he sounded gorgeous and acted it very well.

So from the last post I'm assuming the show is 2 acts? How long did it go?
When I saw the show in San Fran in May, there was no intermission. I'm glad to here that the Aust. section is still in the show. That's a huge part of his heritage, and he's very proud to be from "down under."
Sounds like everyone loves it.
The show started about 7:10 and when I looked at my phone when I left the theater it was about 9:15.
Loved it.
Everything you would have wanted, and more.
I LIKED the show tonight, but I didn't LOVE it as much as everyone seems to have. For a showman, he did a lot of uncomfortable pacing around the stage and talking to his feet. Performance-wise, he was fantastic in terms of charm and charisma. Vocally, I'd give him a B+. Mostly solid, but there were definitely some issues (especially in Somewhere Over the Rainbow). My biggest complaint is about the SHOW. I didn't find the one-man show aspect to be terribly enjoyable. I wanted to know more about him and wanted him to pander to the audience less. There was too much "let me give you an opportunity to catcall me" for my taste.
One of the things that really impressed me when I saw it in San Fran, was that he doesn't take himself seriously at all....NOT AT ALL. That makes him even more appealing. Not that he wasn't all ready. Ha, ha...
There were a few cat-call moments, as well. But, he just kinda rolled with it and enjoyed himself.
I was walking the dog when they were doing the lottery and saw the poor lonely man sitting all by himself. I walked over and asked if it was still just students only and he said yes, so I just shook my head and left.
Does anyone know how the turnout for that ended up?
Is the lonely man you are referring to - the guy who ran the lotto? Or, a person trying to do the lotto?
Everyone won lotto. I think it ended up being 6 people, each of whom (I assume) took 2 tickets.
The guy who ran the lotto.
These "student lotteries" are a joke.
Sorry to hijack this thread but doesn't a student lottery make no sense? Lotteries were introduced to prevent crazy rush lines to incredibly popular shows and student rush is also used to prevent crazy long general rush lines for popular shows. Combining the two concepts is pretty counter-intuitive since you're "double restricting" access to the less expensive tickets? Choosing one or the other prevents the aforementioned crazy lines.
Rant over.
They do not make any sense. They are policy put into place by producers who don't understand the point of lotteries or rush.
I really want to see this show but can not afford the ticket prices. I still can't forgive myself for chosing to see Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Ashley Judd on Broadway instead of The Boy From Oz.

I asked lotto man what the policy was and he told me It depends on how many people show up usually it's one ticket per name pulled but tonight we are doing two and we will do two if the crowd is small.
I've never heard of lotto being 1 per name called its usually 2 tickets per person who wins if they want
He also said that they will sometimes have $30 rear mezz depending on what they have, so then my question would be
why even play lotto if they are partial view boxes as he said they were?
Why not just buy full view lotto losers for $30? (Cheaper than lotto)
Lotto is $31.50
Did you notice any merchandise being sold? Posters, magents, etc? I'm seeing it tomorrow night and I am SO EXCITED.
I didn't look too closely, but I saw a price list that I believe listed posters, magnets, t-shirts, and a Christmas ornament, as well as a few other things I didn't catch.

Regarding the student lotto, I normally agree that the idea is stupid. In theory, though, I think the idea makes sense here. In this case, I think they just overestimated the number of students who would want to see this. From the press release, we know that Hugh wanted to reserve seating for students specifically for each show. It is my impression that they thought a lotto would be nicer than a rush because it doesn't force people to stand on line for hours. They probably anticipated hundreds and hundreds of students getting up to line up at 3 am. I am guessing they wanted to avoid this issue, so they just did the lotto instead. If the turnout continues to be small, I am guessing they will switch to normal student rush.
