Posted: 8/18/10 at 2:31amI know this was probably discussed and bashed but I was just wondering, what was wrong with her that her performance was so terrible? Was she sick? Did she have a death in the family or something?

She was sick. If you watch the rest of the show, she apologises later on.
Still a fantastic performance though...

Bernadette managed to pull off Rose's Turn when she was sick, AND made no excuses for it.
Let's face it, CZJ's performance of Send in the Clowns was mediocre at the best of times. Under that much pressure, she didn't stand a chance.

It was the wrong song choice, and I said that since the start. They should have performed "The Glamorous Life." CZJ could have done like 30 seconds of Clowns in the "songs you know" opening.

She also didn't win the Tony; she had no chance to make an excuse for it. But I'm not saying she would have.

Posted: 8/18/10 at 7:39amI think the wrong choice was to have CZJ perform the song as a solo number. She probably wouldn't have had to mug so much if they had Hanson on stage doing the dialogue set-ups and making it seem like a real scene.

@Mildred....hahahaha. CZJ is not a seasoned stage performer, so there she was: sick, alone and playing in a cavernous barn. Not a recipe for the best performance, but she did fine. That performance was not indicative of her heartbreaking, sweet, and nuanced performance in the show. She won the Tony for her work in the show, not a short TV spot.

She was very nervous, she also showed up at the dress rehearsal and wasn't too good in it either, but her performance of that song on stage was terrific.
I feel like everyone knew she was going to win that night, that's why she got to do that song. They wanted her to do a solo.
I do have a problem with her speech though, I love her as a performer...but she sounded very conceited and the humility she tried to show wasn't sinceere and I felt she wasn't in touch with being a regular person. She is too absorbed in the celebrity world, and I cannot understand why a rich beautiful woman who can have anyone would choose to date Michael Douglas and then brag about it...

Muscle, I think you and other people forget that most actors are hams at heart. I think because CZJ is so serious, gorgeous and austere in her acting, print and modeling work they expect her to be the same in her personal life.
Its my understanding that she is very extroverted, cheeky, bawdy and expressive in her personal life. I think many people expected the Queen of England to walk on stage, based on her performance and that just wasn't happening. I am sure it appeared authentic to those who know her and work with her.
I feel she was sincere. How can you be anymore sincere than showing your crazy, ditzy and bawdyy self to everyone. I dig her.

Bettyboy she IS a seasoned stage performer, that is where she learned her craft, and that is where she begun her career.
And fine, she may have 'appeared authentic to those who know and work with her', but they are not the paying public.

Bettyboy she IS a seasoned stage performer, that is where she learned her craft, and that is where she begun her career.
She did a half-dozen productions in her late teens/early twenties, followed by a twenty year period where the only time she set foot on a stage was to accept film awards. That hardly makes her Julie Harris.

All I could think of during her speech was this:

I wouldn't say it was the wrong song choice, but the method of presenting it was misguided. She was stuck in the middle of this huge stage, playing to 6000 people with a camera basically in her face. Her choices were either to play to the camera and ignore the live audience, which would have been disastrous, or play to the audience and ignore the camera, which would have been equally disastrous. Hanson should have been on that stage with her, his presence and the dialogue only would have enhanced that presentation, not detracted from it.
As for Bernadette and "Rose's Turn," even though it was also a solo piece it is still comparing apples and oranges. "Rose's Turn" is generally seen as a chance for a performer to "go big or go home." Just the fact that she was not confined to sitting in one spot is something that immediately made it easier for that number to come across. The camera direction did not have to rely on such heavy use of the extreme close ups that Catherine was subjected to.
