I thought the performance was awkward, and it did *not* make me want to see this show.

I saw the show several months ago and then again last night at Radio City and it reinforced how awful this show is. I have seen drag queens in Birmingham, Al do better versions of Cher. God awful performance and show.

I rewatched the performance. It was solid, but the camera angles, close-ups, and odd pan outs hurt their performance. The costume parade was barely noticeable. Really didn't do the show any justice.

Didn't love the show, but husband and I ended up caving to its charm and had fun. But the Tonys performance seemed more like an amateur recreation of the show than the actual production, skilled dancers aside. Block looked bored and angry, very different from the sweet/sardonic persona she pulled off so well in the show. (and I'm someone who readily acknowledges and usually forgives the constraints and out-of-context challenges of an awards show performance)

I also saw the show twice in Chicago and as another poster said, I found it richer and more satisfying. I was there right after Cher's visit and some of the ensemble were telling me that Cher wanted it lightened up. I also saw the show both before and after that tacking Mamma Mia style ending was added. (That new ending was Cher's demand.) Previously the show ended with the Believe as a ballad sung by SJB. It was somber but gorgeous. Had much more gravity.
When I revisited the Broadway incarnation, I felt they ripped the spine right out of it to deliver the Vegas show it has become. It was sped up. I called it the Remix version. I still felt SJB was great. She's the saving grace.
I agree this is not a lifetime achievement Tony for Block. Her Cher is a marvel. However, her exquisite creation exists solely in the context of the whole show. I cringed at all her daytime talkshow appearances where she looks campy and garish in daylight and the impression seems cheap. I think those appearances, like the Tony performance, cheapen her performance and wont sell tickets.
She did seem exhausted last night (with good right) and they put her in the least flattering costume with her underboobs in HD. They should have done Sonny and Babe or the full fashion show-PEOPLE WOULD HAVE LOST THEIR MINDS. Instead, they saw something they could get on any night at a mid-range drag show.
The Broadway show is struggling and her Tony won't sell any tickets. I'm sorry but it won't. It will be gone by the end of summer. I found it dreadful save for SJB, Michaela, the costumes and choreo.

Rewatched it, and it wasn't as bad as I felt initially, but just seemed like an odd choice out of the whole show. Loved it in NYC twice, but last night didn't work for me.

I agree with tja... a 2nd watch made me dislike it less (still my least fave of the night), but when you have a built in mega mix...JUST DO THAT! Especially if you are having the whole ensemble perform. If you were going to do a Jimmy Fallon-esque number and only showcase the 3 Cher's and Sonny, fine, but if you are having the entire ensemble join in...

Two words : Oy and no!
I was embarrassed watching it. Georgeanddot nailed it:
“I've seen better Cher impressions from drunk drag queens on the subway at 3 AM.”
