According to ibdb.com as of March 22, 2009:
Chicago - 5124 performances
Rent - 5123 performances
That was quick. Rent is slowly fading away into the past...
"Rent is slowly fading away into the past..."
Melodramatic much? :-0
Technically, its the REVIVAL of CHICAGO that passed RENT.
Bob Fosse's original 1975 Broadway production of CHICAGO only ran 2 years -- 936 performances.

Aw, come on. It's got annoying fans, but it's still a great show.
I agree PiraguaGuy2, the Rent bashing on this board is so cliched, this is a great show what had a hell of a run, i very much doubt a show that had the kinda impact Rent did will fade anywhere.
Chicago is probably gonna be remembered for stunt casting and the movie
And Rent didn't stunt cast!
Yeah of course it did, but not even close to what Chicago did, its become the thing the show is known for here in the UK and the US
And Rent didn't stunt cast!
Mel B.
I love Rent, but this happens to every show. C'est la vie.
RENT didn't do any stunt casting?
Think again...
Joey Fatone
Drew Lachey
Mel B (Scary Spice)
Frenchie Davis
Tamyra Gray
... I'm sure I missed a few others.
We must not forget that Songanddanceman is a fan of LEGALLY BLONDE and FLASH DANCE.
Just kiss your little favorite rock musical "bye bye"... adios!

They opened the same year...it was ineveitable when RENT closed.
Last time I saw CHICAGO it was creaky, labored, and boring. I hope it's picked up the slack.
Congrats to it.
Oh Charleston P**s Off, your more annoying than.....well everything humanly possible.
Your such a sad little queen who seems to take delight in making others miserable...or translation= has NO life, no friends, and no prospects, his best friend is his PC and his countless Broadway cast recording of many shows...oh and of course the fantasy that hes seen so many of the shows he comments on even though every single person on this board no that more truth came out of Comical Ali's mouth during the start of the war on terror in Afghanistan.
So i like Legally Blonde, so i said Flashdance is actually a pretty good show (again im not judging it of a few seconds of footage)....oh but wait, apparently you flew to the UK to watch that one didn't you.
Ive known of chronic illness that is less annoying than you.
Oh and as well as LB and Flashdance i also love Sunday, In The Heights, La Cage, Forum, Sweeney, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunset B and many many more, i just happen to be able to appreciate many different kind of musicals.
Oh and AGAIN Flashdance is all one word, if you are going to continuously insult someone because they like a show (you have never seen) then at least learn the name of the damn show.
And by the way i NEVER said Rent did not stunt cast, i said Chicago is famous for it...there is a difference.
Now what don't you run along and pull some heads of some dolls or something.

Do you reallly want to start chastising people about the way things are properly spelled?
I again never said anything about proper spelling, i said he should know what the name of the show is. His spelling of it was right so that comment is null and void.
I know im a terrible speller, but this is not about that.
Im sick of every single post he replies to of mine he has to insult me, ive never said a damn thing to him. All this started because i said Flashdance was a pretty good show....he has never seen it.
Chicago is probably gonna be remembered for stunt casting and the movie
You're a fool.
Blaxx is right... you're a COMPLETE fool.
This isn't really about "Rent", this is about "Chicago". Why did you have to compare the two?
They're opposites.
Just accept that your cute rock musical about drugs and sex has been dead for a few months now and it is time to move on.
Wow ... Charleston. Do you have a pleasant bone in your body or is your entire existence on this board about posting obnoxious smart arse remarks, combined with putting other people down? Did your parents never tell you "if you don't have something pleasant to say, don't say anything at all"?
Oh and Flashdance (note the fact that its one word) really wasn't that bad. It's no masterpiece of the musical theatre, but its a harmless feel good night out at the theatre. Maybe before you diss someone for not liking it, you should actually see the show (live, not via a bootleg).
Go on, insult me ... I don't really care. Do your worst :)

PS ... snaps to SADM2 for the most accurate review of something I've ever heard on this board:

Also Charlie, Rent is a lot more then what you say it is. If you think that all Rent is about is sex and rock music then that just proves that your more of a moron then I thought.

It's really a shame that every thread on this board i go into to read always has some snarky comment from The Charleston.
So you don't like Rent? Fine, your not the first. But you just HAD to come into this thread about Chicago passing Rent in performances and say "Good". As if Chicago is some piece of brilliant, sophisticated theater. I think Chicago is quite mediocre, but i still have enough respect for theater in general to not make everyone else miserable because i disagree.
It's time to grow up and realize that being a "bully" on broadwayworld.com will not get you anywhere in life.
They are completely different shows...
Chicago is about scandal and JAZZ
And RENT is about AIDS and ROCK
As if Chicago is some piece of brilliant, sophisticated theater.
It is.
