It was also a straight play.
One of my favorite songs.
They did a season of Tom Jones musicals at MUFTI a few years ago and Harold and Maude was one of them. Cass Morgan played Maude; can't remember who played Harold, but it wasn't someone I was familiar with.
Unfortunately neither the book nor score were that great, though Cass did what she could with what she was given. Estelle Parsons played Maude at Papermill back in 2005.
It seems like a good idea for a musical, but this adaptation by Jones and Joseph Thalken is not it.
Actually, I think it's a terrific score, but Morgan wasn't up to its demands; her voice has degraded quite a bit in recent years.
Sadly, this makes it sound like the score is at fault to those listeners who don't know the notes the singer is missing, when the singer is the one at fault, sort of massacring it.

Not a musical please - past that ability and a part that isn't too demanding on acting and hopefully a romantic partner that will be close to her age - like 5 years not 20 years apart
"How about a musical version of Arsenic and Old Lace?"
Yes, please!
Thanks for all those learned replies re Harold and Maud-the film is just so joyous and I always shed a tear.
Jordan-I was missing your 'caustic comments' in the best possible way.
Oh well I have to be careful what I say. Someone somewhere might take a slight offense to something I might or might not say and we wouldnt want them having to process those feelings, would we?
I'm told tonight that there's interest to bring the show, with Chita to London.
I always wish I had seen Chita in Lorca's THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA. I agree with Ljay that it'd be wonderful to see her in a play (comedy or drama, really). I didn't see her in THE VISIT, but I have been listening to the OBCRs of THE KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN and CHICAGO lately...she really is in a class of her own.
If you are in NY the York Theatre Company has been running a production of Harold & Maude the musical since mid-May which ends its run this Saturday.
Edit: actually it has been extended until the 21st

inception, the Harold and Maud musical never ran at the York this year; it was replaced by Cagney.
"I don't think anything can top the Charles Busch/Lypsinka LEGENDS from a few years back. "
We have Haley and Juliet Mills touring Legends in Australia as I type with Maxwell Caulfield looking as handsome as ever--didn't see it and certainly not a sell out.
Dirty Dancing doing very good business[no taste these Aussies] and I saw last night a brilliant re-imagining of Painted for Memory by 2 local artists Michael Fazon[We will rock you,Hedwig] and Bobby Fox[Frankie Valli Jersey Boys]-the band-the sound-STUNNING !

"Speaking to someone last night (someone who would have first hand knowledge of this), I was told that THE VISIT certainly isn't Chita's final appearance on Broadway and that she's already looking at coming back in something else. I don't know anything beyond that, but it made me exceptionally happy and I thought I'd pass it on. "
Jordan are you talking to Bananas again and thinking they are human

Chita Rivera is Thea Spyer! Angela Lansbury is Edie Windsor!
A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT
the new Kron-Tesori musical!

I believe what Chita said was that she'd love to do, and would be open to, another Broadway show. Not that she's "already involved in a new Broadway bound show."

I know that was just a (very sweet) joke, but the idea tickles me!

Though Jordan didn't say he heard it from Chita or that Chita had said it. It sounds like he heard it from someone who would know.

Such a great song. Thank you for sharing.
As for Miss Rivera I hope she'll continue to share her incredible talent with us for many years to come.

Actually, Horsetears it was meant as an amusing as well as an intriuging idea but not really as a joke. I was quite sincere about the idea of Chita and Angela as Thea Speyer and Edie Windsor. So, glad you're tickled.
