Is Jason telegraphing that Chita is going to be out?

I'd read something (thought it was here) that Mary Beth Peil was taking over Judy Kuhn's track...might she double as the standby?
(I was hoping for Alma Cuervo, as I have enjoyed her work in other pieces I've seen.)
Carol Lawrence would be amazing!

What? Nobody guessed Marin Mazzie?
If Mary Beth Peil ever went on for Chita, she'd have to sing the score an octave higher at least. She's a soprano, not a baritone.
Mary Beth Peil is much too old for Kuhn's role, unless that's why they are recasting the adult children, to make the family older to match Rees. That role was screaming for Alma Cuervo. I could see Peil being the Standby. But the role does have some intricate dancing, so a known triple threat like Chita would make more sense.

Gotham, I actually jokingly told my friend it was Marin, even though I doubt it is. My actual guess is Priscilla Lopez, and I'm not sure why.
Oh, wow. Lopez would make a lot of sense given the dancing.
I've been told Donna McKechnie.

A friend of mine on facebook that's rehearsing in the same space as The Visit just posted a photo with Donna McKechnie saying she's "joined the cast of The Visit!"
Wow... I thought of McKechnie but wasn't sure if she was right for such a dark and "nasty" character.

Won't the music have to be transposed for Donna should she go on for Chita? She's more of a mezzo.
Anyway, this is really cool news.
Thrilled beyond words with this new confirmation of La McKechnie. Moving to the city in a few weeks so I'll be fortunate enough to see her at a moment's notice. Gotta monitor this show's performance schedule like a hawk.

I would like to believe that the creatives on this show are smart enough to have taken that into consideration, jv92.
This seems to be a very smart move by the producers. I would definitely think Donna is a big enough name amongst the ticket buyers who are buying based on Chita's involvement to keep refunds/exchanges to a minimum in the event that Chita is out and Donna is in. I know I for one, though disappointed to be missing Chita, would still be excited to catch Donna.
I'm just getting more and more excited for this show.
Also confirmed: Mary Beth Piel as Matilde. Elena Shadow as Ottilie. Looks like they definitely raised the ages of Rees' family. Their son, Karl has also been recast with George Abud.

Keys will definitely need to be transposed up for Donna. Chita's low keys give the music such an eeriness, as they did in Spiderwoman.
Donna seems a little too sweet and wholesome for this role, but I'd love to see her take a stab at it.
I freaking love Donna McKechnie. I also adore the 2003 cast of Nine, so Chita and Mary Beth Peil (who sounded great on the title song) together again is also all a big win.
Ok this is surprising to me - it's odd to think that there is someone waiting in wings who I would be very happy/not too disappointed to see perform the role. I hope she has a scheduled performance, or gets to record a bonus track for the cast recording.
I'd imagine she'd interpret the music somewhat similar to Lansbury's Love and Love Alone demo that can be heard on YouTube, which has some warmth to it unlike Chita's very bitter interpretation.
I really hope there's a decent amount of notice if and when Donna goes on. Would love to get into NYC to see this when Donna goes on.

I think you just stand by when you're a standby. Like, for a moment's notice.
Any chance Chita will only do a fixed schedule of 6-7 performances a week, with Donna filling in for the rest?

Normally a standby only goes on last-minute, but Jackie Burns did fill for Menzel during vacation days, noted on Ticketmaster ahead of time. So it's possible.
