Wow. This is great news...hope the Barrymore has a hit!
I am so glad that (so far) FOUR revivals have been announced: Company, A Chorus Line, Les Miserables and 110 in the Shade. Plus Grey Gardens! The 2006-2007 season is looking promising already! (I doubt it can get worse than 2005-2006)

Yup. Starring Audra McDonald.
2006-2007 looks a helluva lot more promising than 2005-2006 every could have.

I don't think I've ever been in that theater; I'll look at a seating chart, just for curiousity's sake. Does anyone know how many seats it has?

Posted: 6/14/06 at 9:43pmCoo. I'm glad it's not going into the Eugene O'Neil just because I've already been in that theater. I wonder how Company will do in the Barrymore. It's so out of place. I hope I get to see it in December. Oiy, I forgot about Grey Gardens. There's too much to choose from this winter - in a good way.

Posted: 6/14/06 at 9:45pmThe Barrymore seems like it's off in its own little world. It looks a little big to me, but we'll see what happens. However, this shows that they're not planning on closing Sweeney *because of* Company, for what it's worth.

Is it just me or is it odd that they are choosing the SAME director for Company? Not ONLY that, but that he will be using the same directing concept - playing the instruments. I'm going to come right out and say that I haven't seen Sweeny. Would if I could.
From everything I've seen on different entertainment shows, Broadway boards, and the Tonys, Sweeny looks like a great production. I like Sondheim's shows though I really haven't had the opportunity to see that many, but it's just odd that would put another Sondheim show on Broadway using the same "unique" concept. Is it technically unique if it's been done? I've listened to the OBC recording, and just don't see it really fitting the production like it does for Sweeny. Opinions from those that have had the opportunity to see Sweeny or from those that have seen a production of Company?

"...he will be using the same directing concept - playing the instruments..."
You gotta have a gimmick.
#21re: Company to the Ethel Barrymore
Posted: 6/14/06 at 11:17pmBut as we see with Disney spectaculars that your gimmicks have to fit the show and story!

It's no gimmick. Look into the concept a little before you pass the judgement.
The concept originally came from financial limitations -- not Doyle as pretentious director sitting around thinking up what kind of "art form" he could devise in order to shake the world of the theater. He made it work for Sweeney Todd as a way to have a good, but financially smart production, rather than a cheap, inexpensive one. For Company, he's refined it, and rather than putting a concept into a show, he's put the show into the concept. It works even better in Company, rather than just a performance technique, as an artistically astounding conceit; the metaphor the instruments create in how they enhance Company's plotline makes for one of the most thrilling, intense, emotionally profound moments of theater I have ever experienced.

>I wonder how Company will do in the Barrymore. It's so out of place.<
The Barrymore is on a street with two other Broadway theatres (the Brooks Atkinson and the Biltmore), is directly across the street from the Edison Hotel, and is about two steps away from the TKTS booth, when the booth reopens. How is it out of place?
>The Barrymore seems like it's off in its own little world. It looks a little big to me, but we'll see what happens.<
The Barrrymore has about 1,050 seats and a single balcony. It's generally been home to plays, more than musicals (though it last housed Ring of Fire). It's not too big for Company. And if you want to talk about theatres that are off the beaten path, go look at the Cort, Belasco, Al Hirscheld and Nederlander Tneatres.
