Create The "Best Replacement" Tony Award Immediately So Marin Can Win

Theoretically, if this award existed now, could Rannells be nominated for best replacement for the same role as Goff is nominated for best supporting?

Mary Tyler Moore was given a special Tony in 1980 for replacing Tom Conti in Whose Life Is It Anyway?

Marin was amazing in Next To Normal when she took over as well, why this woman never given the leads to start with is a mystery to me

Just for arguments sake, who would everyone nominate for a Best Replacement Actor/Best Replacement Actress award over the past season?

Couldn't a replacement Tony possibly get ugly.
If not getting nominated for an ordinary Tony is considered a "snub" what would not being nominated when your successor goes on to be nominated or even win for a replacement Tony be considered?

Indeed. As great as Alice was I loved Marin even more as Diana. And same went for Jason Danieley over J Robert Spencer.

She didn't really make a distinctive mark in Bullets over Broadway- but then, few people did

I was just thinking about this the other day. I saw her first performance, and I have not been able to get it out of my head. What Marin Mazzie is doing on that stage is simply unreal. It is unlike any performance I have ever seen.

Agree, she deserved a best replacement Tony that year (even more so than Bernadette in my opinion, and that is saying something coming from me!).
But let's not forget she did get a leading, or at least highly coveted role, in Bullets. It's a shame the show wasn't a success and she didn't have slightly more interesting material though.

The two actors would each be in competition with different shows and different actors in different political climates, so not completely comparable situations. If a replacement gets nominated when the original got snubbed it might not be because R was considered by the voters as artistry better than O but just that O was up against say a legendary actor in a long awaited return or hot fresh talent in their debut or a multi nominee who was considered due etc.

Sunny those are very logical arguments. But they are similar to the logical compeittion-based arguments made for why people who are already considered "snubbed" weren't really "snubbed" at all when they weren't nominated in ordinary Tonys categories. It doesn't stop the umbrage.

Agree with this thread 100%. I saw Marin in the role on Tuesday night and she was just divine. A very different take on the role than Kelli, very mature and brazen. Where I got the sense that Anna's toughness was all part of the "whistle a happy tune" veneer Kelli put on the whole character, Marin made sure that Anna was always - first and foremost - a woman who had lived a very trying life before arriving in Siam. Daniel Dae Kim was also wonderful (though his singing voice is quite noticeably subpar), and Ruthie Ann Miles and Ashley Park continue to make incredibly strong impressions.
It's an absolute shame that the Best Replacement Tony doesn't exist after Marin has given not one, but TWO award-worthy "replacement" performances in some of her most recent Broadway outings. And what range! Next to Normal followed by The King and I?? God, this woman is good. But despite the fact that she won't receive any physical accolades for this performance, it's a joy to see her perform and I'm just happy she's back.

She's a three time Tony nominee, who in addition to those roles, originated numerous others. I understand what you're saying, but it's not like she's never originated a role in her life before. She's headlined numerous high profile productions.

Seeing her Friday from third-row center. I felt I just HAD to spring for good seats.

There IS precedent for nominating a "replacement" actor, when Larry Kert was nominated instead of Dean Jones in the original production of COMPANY many years ago. So it has happened before, and no reason why it shouldn't happen again. Poor Tony nominators, having to see all those shows just to qualify. My heart bleeds for them...

Mazzie is a true powerhouse. As much as I enjoyed Kelli in the role, Marin just brings a more complete woman to the stage... I can't quite explain it, but she's clearly owning the role.
And that voice. I mean, really. She's a total package.
