Cynthia Erivo to Star in ‘Prima Facie,’ Film Adaptation

Desperately! I loved her in The Color Purple and I'd listen to her sing anything, but there's nothing particularly compelling/unique about her performances that would justify taking this away from Comer, who I think is as much if not more of a name?

It must be that Comer passed on it, because she already filmed the dang thing for NT.

The brilliance of the theatrical performance is that it's just her, and I've already seen that (twice), so I don't care if the movie goes in a different direction."

I understand what makes the one-woman performance compelling but I think a film version would have to have other actors playing the different characters and hopefully build up the script. One of my issues with the play was that there was rarely a moment to breathe. I'd hope they could add more depth by making it less chatty and better developing the other characters. If the script doesn't change much, I think it'll fall flat.

Comer was absolutely offered the role but obviously passed it up. Comer is a name, Erivo is not. Comer made the play, she is the play. It’s likely she’s attached to a role that hasn’t been announced (within the Marvel-verse) which will take up a lot of her time. But let’s not be naive and pretend Comer wasn’t always the planned star of the eventual movie, which was in pre-production before the Broadway run was even announced.

On a slightly different note I always loved that Tess was Northern. It added another layer to the character and now that she’ll likely he a Londoner in the movie it takes away something from her character.

A live capture of the London production with Jodie Comer actually does exist. I was fortunate enough to have seen it in movie theaters during its run in 2022.

Hey, Pauline Collins got an Oscar nomination for a film adaptation of Shirley Valentine!

"

Yes, and it was pretty terrific. Caused us to grab tickets for the Broadway run as soon as they went on sale. Jodie knocked that performance out of the park. FYI, the UK National Theatre Live does bring the film around to US theatres periodically, but only for a day or two. Last time I saw it in the DC area was early 2025. https://www.ntlive.com/find-a-venue/

THR review out of TIFF: "There is no use sugar-coating the huge disappointment the film turns out to be."

Deadline:"a gamble that perhaps doesn’t reproduce the power of the stage"

C from the Playlist: "Erivo is game and committed. She is very, very good...Considering the importance of what White wants the audience to contemplate, the result leaves you wanting.

The Wrap is mixed-positive: "White’s film is no less devastating for its changes, but they do simplify some of the material’s complexities. "

6/10 from Next Best Picture: "Erivo delivers a confident performance that is far more credible than the material she is handed... the film mistakes the righteousness of its argument for the persuasiveness of its drama

I think Ms Erivo has some bad management. I think it's a big mistake to focus on films so much - especially ones that are not musicals. If she had done a theatre concert tour instead to follow up Wicked I think that would have benefitted her career more, because she's frigging amazing live. That could have built her fan base more, and then she might get offers for bigger films. She needs to do some hit nutty comedy like Liza did with the Arthur films.

Thats not what she wants though, its clear shes chasing her Oscar and in general is after prestige/award bait roles that have her front and centre. She doesn't want to be pigeon holed as a 'musical actress' or just show tunes.

I wouldnt put her in a comedy at all, she isn't funny. Her Elphaba lost all the dry humour the role has on stage, and lines that are normally funny didnt land. Shes more of a dramatic actress, she was very good in Harriet

Oh my, she was far from good in Harriet.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

She clearly wants to be seen as a serious dramatic star. Both this and DRACULA are great moves on paper (better selections than FOCKERS 4). HARRIET was a bad movie, but it got her 2 Oscar noms and it tripled its budget.

She will always be famous in the musical theatre/concert world and will always have some kind of draw. She can tour and release music and do theatre whenever she wants.

She should do an action movie (one that could spawn a franchise). Her equivalent of John Wick. She could be fun as a Bond Villain too, especially if they let her sing the song!
