Cynthia Erivo to Star in ‘Prima Facie,’ Film Adaptation

Desperately! I loved her in The Color Purple and I'd listen to her sing anything, but there's nothing particularly compelling/unique about her performances that would justify taking this away from Comer, who I think is as much if not more of a name?

It must be that Comer passed on it, because she already filmed the dang thing for NT.

The brilliance of the theatrical performance is that it's just her, and I've already seen that (twice), so I don't care if the movie goes in a different direction."

I understand what makes the one-woman performance compelling but I think a film version would have to have other actors playing the different characters and hopefully build up the script. One of my issues with the play was that there was rarely a moment to breathe. I'd hope they could add more depth by making it less chatty and better developing the other characters. If the script doesn't change much, I think it'll fall flat.

Comer was absolutely offered the role but obviously passed it up. Comer is a name, Erivo is not. Comer made the play, she is the play. It’s likely she’s attached to a role that hasn’t been announced (within the Marvel-verse) which will take up a lot of her time. But let’s not be naive and pretend Comer wasn’t always the planned star of the eventual movie, which was in pre-production before the Broadway run was even announced.

On a slightly different note I always loved that Tess was Northern. It added another layer to the character and now that she’ll likely he a Londoner in the movie it takes away something from her character.
