Was this previously announced or did this come from no where? Either I was under a rock or this was a surprise announcement.
Either way, I'm very excited as I've never seen the musical before and I really think a stellar cast could be assembled for this one.
Glad a musical revival is getting announced in what has so far been, pardon my pun, a sea of new musicals.
I dunno - I always love this show in a small theatre (it started down at the miniscule Café Cino, then the Lortel). The 1985 revival at the Lamb's was amazing.
I can't imagine sitting half a block away in a Broadway barn and getting the same joy as I have watching 6 terrific performers close up and intimate, with just two pianos and percussion (the way it was written to be done).
I think this could be wonderful. I've always thought it could be expanded--and Randy Skinner has just the right touch.
But how will it compare to the TV version with Ann Margret and Ann Miller. Off to that other site to look for clips.
Somewhere there's a tape....
Such a little gem, hope it doesn't get lost on a big Broadway barn. Is Megan Hilty too old for the Bernadette Peters role? I only know the show through the cast recording, though I imagine Peters was very young when she did it. Can't wait to hear about the casting either way.

Patti LuPone will star!
Here are some delicious photos of Bernadette Peters in the original 1968-69 Off-Broadway production:
It sounds like they're trying to make Dames at Sea more like Anything Goes.

Patti LuPone will star? Only if she plays the battleship.
Love those pictures. Funny she never played Betty Boop. Bwaaaaaah!
It does sound a lot like Anything Goes. That's fine with me though, I loved Anything Goes and would love to see it again. This show sounds very interesting, can't wait to hear about the cast!
A nice surprise- I can't believe there have been no rumblings of this.

Thats a lovely surprise indeed, I agree!
I always felt like it was Anything Goes meets 42nd Street. You have the aging star, the ingenue and the loud mouth comedian.
I live for a tap show. 42nd Street was my everything when I first moved to NYC in 2001. I saw it at 15 times in a year. I know I will be seeing this. Randy Skinner is amazing at this style of show.

Why don't you believe it will actually go to Broadway?

The original DAMES AT SEA was an affectionate spoof of the old Warner Brothers musicals. The tiny scale and purposely corny songs and dialogue was all part of that. To build it into a an ANYTHING GOES type show is to lose its essence.
There's a little video from the 1971 recording on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HXn076djr8
I hope this revival works. Big fan of the material.
Agreed with beaemma - anyone who takes Dames At Sea to Broadway simply doesn't get the show (which wouldn't be new with Skinner...).
Broadway, I'll lick you yet!
Although it included references to other musicals, the show was intended specifically as a spoof of the 1930's Busby Berkeley musicals at Warner Bros., with Bernadette's role a parody of Ruby Keeler's parts. In fact, the character's name is Ruby!

If the production looks anything like their website, I'm all for it.
It'll be nice to have a traditional Broadway musical this season, and I believe this is only the third officially announced revival (besides LES MIZ and HEDWIG). Gonna be a fun season.
