Jackiebro, you need to grow up. No grown up would say what you said anyways. I'd suggest "Wonderful Town" for the 1940's. Not 100% sure if it was in 40's though.

Wonderful Town is set in 1935.

I'm with JackiesBroJoe on this one, "The Wedding Singer" for the 80s sounds like a joke. First of all, the fact that there are not that many musicals that take place in the 80s (and the one that celebrates the 80s is mediocre at best) should give us a hint that the 80s just wasn't that great of a decade to start with.
Back on topic, I agree that Falsettos should be the show for the 80s.
I suggest Gypsy for the 1930s and West Side Story for the 1950s.

Ok, but the musical might as well be "I Love the 80s, the Musical." Just because it isn't a deep analysis of the decade or even "good" by some standards, I can't think of another musical that is more about the 80s.

And I think I stand by Rent for the 90s, because even though it doesn't sum up life for many American's in the 90s (least of all, me), it does represent the rebellion and emotional outcry of young people often associated with that decade. (imo)

I am not old enough to have experienced the 30's, but I know from history that the great depression was the most significant and defining occurrence of that decade. I would nominate "42nd Street." I know it was a movie way before becoming going on Broadway.

I think hair is a good choice for the second part of the sixties, but i think hairspray is a good one for the first part of the sixties.

Although I agree that Rent says more about the 90s than it does about the 80s (for better or worse), If you go by the AIDS treatments (the pill alarms), etc... I think it had to be set in the 80s.

Actually...with Roger and Mimi both having AZT, etc, it would have to be the 90's. In the 80's we were still so behind on people having drugs to help fight the disease, especially those who have no money! Even though no time is given...I would really think that RENT is a 90's show and Falsetto's an 80's show since it is about the beginning of the AIDS epi.
