Desire Under the Elms To close May 24th 2009

Looks like the show is closing earlier than expected.
It was suppoed to run thru July 5th but I guess because of the low grosses the producers decided to close up shop early.

I wonder if I should see this before it closes

Also no offical announcement yet but from the looks of it I'd say it is indeed going to close on the 24th because now telecharge is only selling tickets through then.

That certainly SOUNDS like a fair assumption to make.

PG....he finally makes a thread that MIGHT be of interest to others and you have to slam him for that one too? At least this time he's trying.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Good scoop, Tom. I'm guessing they will do a press release tomorrow. They never seem to do this kind of stuff on weekends.

I saw this last night. It was great acting-wise. That said, even with it being a Saturday night, the orchestra was not full. No idea about the mezz.

Not that it really matters b/c from the sounds of it their are usually empty seats but where are the student rush seats located?
If they are in the front row is the stage really high? I remember with Gypsy how ppl were complaining b/c the stage was so highh

I rushed to get my ticket before it opened -- and it's for May 23rd matinee. I was talking to one of the oldtimers at Sardi's yesterday who'd seen the matinee that day -- said the acting was fine but didn't care for the play. And this guy's been going to the theatre since the 1940's, sees everything and knows his stuff. Based on his comment, I'm still going.

I was also there on Saturday night. I got my rush ticket at 4:30 and still got front row, so that should tell you how easy the rush is for this show. The stage is relatively low, so the view from the those seats is quite good.

I was somewhat underwhelmed by the show. The set is certainly impressive and the acting, especially from Gugino and Dennehy is great. I felt Schreiber's accent was a bit over done, but he also delivered a strong performance.

I may get beat up for this, but I don't think it was the smartest decision to bring this to Broadway. I saw the dress rehearsal, and all I could think about was what was so thrilling about this show that it HAD to come to Broadway. It's a fine production with two fantastic performances, but it has a limited audience, and Brian isn't as big of a star as we would like to think (especially next to the wealth of A-list actors currently in shows).

That said, it is a shame this is closing this early. It certainly doesn't deserve it.

When it did not get Tony nods, its fate was sealed.

It is a shame as it was very well done & Gugino was fantastic.

I agree with singtopher. Sometimes things need to rest on their laurels and go out on top. Not everything that has a great run in LA or Chicago has to come to NYC. Gugino is amazing, but I am not sure it warranted a move to the St. James of all places. Plus it is just tough competition right now on Broadway for celebrity driven plays.

I think this is an interesting and instructive story, about a show that had no reason to move to NY other than a positive review from Isherwood -- which then, as it turned out, wasn't enough to keep it running. It's a good lesson for other shows in the future.

I really find this so surprising, this negative response. I figured that this show would be a major player given Dennehy is the star. I think his talent is incredibly strong. I am surprised at the underwhelming, tepid response. I hope I get to see it before it closes.

I'm still surprised we haven't seen an official closing announcment yet. Usually Telecharge takes the dates off sale a few days or a day after the closing is announced not before they announce.

Also IDK why it like disappeared from TDF.
You would think if they aren't selling they'd want to sell some seats on TDF to make some $ right?

and HAIR will make him a ton of money.

And I'm still surprised to see "Reason to be Pretty" doing so poorly. It got great reviews, and it's got such a relevant theme to it. It seems like the perfect show for theater majors coming to visit the city in the spring/summer.
