I was watching the wedding singer (the touring show) and while it was fun and pretty good, I don't think it warranted a standing ovation, however everybody around me thought it did and I had to stand up to see the encore. Why do people give standing ovations to every show they see? I save it for shows that truly warrant it
Personally I only stand up if I feel it's really justified. (To be fair, I sometimes stand up for my friends.)
I think people stand up...
1.) If they're not a theater person, they might just be so excited about the experience they feel it's justified
2.) I've heard this theory that because it's SO expensive to go to the theater now, people have to justify to themselves that the experience was worth themoney

Only when everone else in the audience does. Think the only shows I have seen standing ovations at are Blood Brothers, We Will Rock You, Wicked and Sound of Music, and i belive that the only one where it was due to the performances given and the show etc and not somebody famous/well known starring in the show was Blood Brothers.
A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!''
Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'
I got told off by the woman sitting next to me when I didn't give a standing ovation at 'In my Life'. I applauded the actors for getting through it, but there's no way I was going to get to my feet for that show. Updated On: 5/7/08 at 11:10 AM
Nope, not automatically. If the show is really something special, yes.
I've led one standing ovation, and I've also been the only person to steadfastly sit there among a bunch of standing screamers.

It's very rare that shows here in the UK get a standing ovation unless its a press night, Amazing or has one of them get up and dance moments as so many do now.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
Yes, I almost always do. But I guess it's because I'm young and haven't seen as many shows as most of you, or rather haven't seen anything I considered bad.
it really depends on the energy of the show and the audience.
We did not stand for Curtains and first until Debra Monk came out (I stood cause of a connection I have with her....)
I did stand for Mary Poppins cause it brought back so much childhood memories for me that I literally found myself moved to do it and did not even know it....(Like.. wait a minute, I am standing....lol)
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
