Does PBS want to record to COMPANY?

Posted: 6/15/07 at 5:26pmActually, there is some truth to the possibility of PBS recording this. Nothing is set in stone yet, of course. I don't want to get my hopes up, but this would be so, so wonderful.

Seeing as how badly The TONY performance came off, I doubt this will happen.
The show has been staged for a theatre and the performances tempered to that, I think it would be a big mistake.
And again, the expense would be enormous and the show has already lost it's total investment.
But I would rather see any Sondheim on PBS instead of those continuous DoWop Shows.

Your opinion about the Tony performance is irrelevant. The biggest flub of said performance was that the timing of Raul's fingers and the actual piano playing was off. But a taping of the actual performance would feature Raul ACTUALLY playing the piano, as he does onstage.
The show has been staged for a theatre and the performances tempered to that, I think it would be a big mistake.
EVERY.SINGLE.SHOW that has been taped to air on PBS has been staged for a theater, and the performances tempered to that. That's the whole point! It's not MEANT to look like film - they're filming a staged show.
And again, the expense would be enormous and the show has already lost it's total investment.
It's ITS total investment. it's = it is. That's a huge pet peeve of mine. People on the boards continually whine about how they don't film enough productions, or release them on DVD because of "expenses". So the fact that they're even CONSIDERING doing this, regardless of your personal feelings towards the show, should be cause for celebration, not snarkiness. We want MORE Broadway on tv - we want MORE exposure to shows like these.
But I would rather see any Sondheim on PBS instead of those continuous DoWop Shows.
Amen.

Would they be filming it live at the theater or taping it in a studio? If this is actually going to be filmed live, they better get moving.
I'm not holding my breath at all.

>> DVDs would belittle the impact live theatre has on audiences, and would dwindle audiences for years and years if shows were just automatically released on DVD.
Yeah, yeah, we heard that same line about movies, and it doesnt hold any more water now than it did then. As New York becomes more and more expensive as a tourist destination, producers would be complete idiots not to move to DVD as a second-tier income stream. It certainly hasnt hurt folks like Cirque de Soleil or the Metropolitan Opera. Face it: the only people blocking this right now are the unions, who still somehow live in the 19th century and think they *own* a production no matter where or how it's shown.

Sean: I agree. I know bootlegs are illegal, but the producers aren't giving us any options. They don't stop ME from going to shows, I just like to be able to see it 5 years after it closed! We need a record of these things!
And Chica: Thanks for driving the its/it's point home. Drives me nuts too. Almost as bad as your/you're!

I certainly hope they do! Especially for us who weren't fortunate enough to see it live! I absolutely adore my new cast recording of it and a DVD of the show would be fantastic! (I think a DVD recording of Grey Gardens is a great idea too!)

Posted: 6/16/07 at 11:35amTheActr97J , they would film it in the theater, but I don't think it would actually air live. The people in charge already know which performance(s) they would tape, but finalizations are still in the works.

I agree with Sean Martin - there are so many Met recordings and it doesnt stop people from going to the opera. The experience of seeing it live can't compare to watching it on tv anyway, but once these shows are over, they are over. In 15 years I'd like to have a decent recording of Company that's not taped from inside someone's jacket..

Posted: 6/16/07 at 1:24pmI would absolutely LOVE if this show was recorded! People like me don't have the means to get to NY regularly and I'm dying to be able to see this show any way I can - even if it has to be on PBS. I hope this happens, I really do.

Posted: 6/16/07 at 1:48pmvfd88 -- Piazza was part of the Live from Lincoln Center series, which contractually cannot be released on DVD. Company wouldn't be a part of that series, it'll most likely be part of the Great Performances series, which are released on DVD (like Candide and South Pacific were in the past few years).

If there was any more info, it would be running rampant on this board plus All That Chat seconds after anyone heard anything.
We don't know anything more today than we did last week.

Not necessarily.
The fact that it's not "running rampant" just means it can't be shared yet -- updates shouldn't get out until it's definite.
