Not necessarily.
The fact that it's not "running rampant" just means it can't be shared yet -- updates shouldn't get out until it's definite.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 11:51amThey could tape the show after it closes too. I believe that both Into The Woods and Sunday In The Park were recorded after the shows closed. They just brought the cast back together for one night to make the movies

INTO THE WOODS was taped right before its run ended...the entire original cast was brought back for about a week of performances which were taped and edited together.
And going further back in the thread, it is not true that every single PBS taping of a stage piece was taped live on the Broadway stage. PASSION was taped in a studio, with the performances being adjusted for the fact that there was no audience. Though not my favorite piece, I think it's the most successful of the Sondheim shows recorded. This production of COMPANY would lend itself beautifully to that.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 12:03pmI think PASSION works the best too. So did they use all the original sets?

Passion was taped in the theater, but after the show closed, therefore there is not audience.
The filmed performance of Cats, however, was filmed in a specially designed studio.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 12:45pmWhy would they be any more than normal if it's just going to be a regular performance?
#61re: Does PBS want to record to COMPANY?
Posted: 6/20/07 at 3:53pmI would guess that a good bit of the audience would be by invitation if they did bring the cast back to film post-closing.

I dont know, because I always assume the worst? hehe
No but I just thought if they did something like what robbiej described with Into the Woods that maybe it would be more. But I dont know - I just want this to happen
#63re: Does PBS want to record to COMPANY?
Posted: 6/20/07 at 4:58pmBut you wouldn't be buying tickets to a recording session. You'd be buying tickets to a performance that just so happens to be the recorded one. It would most likely happen before closing, as opposed to being done by bringing the cast back in post-closing.

Posted: 6/20/07 at 5:29pmEven if they announce it I won't believe it til I'm sitting on my couch watching it on PBS. Noise/Funk fell through and I'm still disapointed about that. I really hope they put this on film though, I really do. With the exception of Follies, Assassins and Merrily(are those the only 3 without some kind of film preservation?), I think it's wonderful that the work of America's most important theatrical composer has been saved for future generations.

I believe that both Into The Woods and Sunday In The Park were recorded after the shows closed. They just brought the cast back together for one night to make the movies
Actually, INTO THE WOODS was taped in May 1989. The producers didn't even announce it was closing until August that year and it closed on September 2. Yes, original cast stars Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason came back for one week of performances that were taped with the audience, and some daytime scenes were filmed without. The rest of the cast was the company that was playing the show at the time.
SUNDAY was taped in the Booth theatre over several days just after it closed in October 1985.
PASSION was also filmed (not taped) in the Plymouth theatre just after the closing in January 1995.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

"The rest of the cast was the company that was playing the show at the time."
Are you saying that the rest of the cast that was playing at the time performed during that week but only Bernadette and Joanna were filmed? Or are you saying that the rest of the cast at that time was still the original opening night cast? Because I'm pretty sure the film includes the original opening night rest-of-the-cast in its entirety, not the replacements who were in the show in May '98.

I'm pretty sure it was filmed in a theatre because in the behind the scenes featurette, you can easily tell it's a legit theatre in London.

At the Time INTO THE WOODS was taped (May 23-27, 1988 ) most of the OC members were still playing the show.
Bernadette Peters had departed in April 1988 as per her contract, to do a movie. By mutual agreement her name was not submitted to the Tony Awards that year since by the time of the awards she was out of the show. Also, based on the reviews, teh produvers correctrly felt Joanna Gleason would win if the vote was not split between her and a co-star. Sadly, Gleason left at the end of June 1988 jsuat a few weeks after sh won the Tony, which in a curious twist was presnted to her by Bernatte Petrers. Both returned for the week of performances when teh show was taped.
The only non-OC member on the video is Cindy Robinson in the minor role of Snow White having taken over from Jean Kelly.
I saw the show when it opened and again at the closing and even at the final performance most of the OC members remained.

Then what's the point of seeing a show if you KNOW it would be out on DVD in 5 years?
DVDs would belittle the impact live theatre has on audiences, and would dwindle audiences for years and years if shows were just automatically released on DVD.
You wanna see a show on DVD? Rent the Chicago movie, don't whine about why Broadway shows should be on DVD.
I'm sorry, but I think that's a lame argument. NOTHING compares to a live performance of a staged-show and nothing will diminish that though, not even sales of DVDs of that show. IMO, the thing that hurts Broadway more than anything is lack of public (those outside NY and Bway fandom) knowledge of the shows that are currently running on Broadway. There's lack of real advertisement. Sure the hottest shows will get to do a performance on the Today show or the View or Letterman once in a while, but it really doesn't do that much good to the real casual viewer. People don't watch the Tonys because it's an award show about Broadway and only those who are willing to do their own research will appreciate it.
IMO, if more shows were at least broadcast and shown in their entirety, then it'll help get people to know the shows more and maybe look forward to them when they tour etc. Also, I would think selling DVDs would help profits and gauge how popular the show is and be a good indicator of whether or not the show should tour, etc. Hell, having Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods on DVD makes me want to see them live all the more.
