According to a member on ATC - PBS wants to record COMPANY. But nothing has been signed yet.
I have no idea how true that is. But it is very interesting.

I find it funny because when a member on here asked if PBS would record it - we all jumped on him and said NOOO WAY!!

Dear god, let us hope so! Though it seems unlikely...

If they do, can they record Grey Gardens as well? Please?

That would make my life complete. Seriously. I want to see Grey Gardens so, so badly.
But anyway, I would love it if they recorded Company, too.
ooh i would love for them to record Company! especially now that's gonna be gone gone gone.
Yes, tobias! I might even think about giving them $$ when they beg for it, for they will have proven themselves sensible!
Sondheim has a lot of history with PBS programs recording his shows. I don't know if it's his clout or concessions he and his collaborators make to make it happen, but this would be a wonderful one to preserve.
I hope this happens, this show needs to be preserved.
I'm with you BTR! I would sit through hours of the PBS Charity Drive if this were true.

If this happens I promise I will never make fun of their fundraising ever again
Shame on you Broadwayguy - so few shows (good or bad) have the opportunity to be preserved for posterity - I would think any theater lover would be pleased. While you may not have liked Company (I didn't either!), I'm sure there are shows that you would absolutely love to pop into your DVD and watch that perhaps you never had the chance to see - think about future generations being able to view examples of 21st Century theater.
Oh, those videos (now on DVD) do exist of practically EVERY show on Broadway from the past decades. Alas, they're not 'legal', but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
It would still be nice to have a good quality, professional recording
I do hope they do this. I support PBS anyway though. I think it's important.
I'll believe it when I see something on Playbill.com.
Weren't they supposedly recording "Movin' Out" too?
They were, and it fell through at the last minute. Unfortunately, I have a sinking feeling Company will suffer a similar fate.
Sadly, unless they've been working on this for awhile, it seems a little late to be getting our hopes up.

Oh they exist ... and they are CRAP! People smuggle cams into theatre, they can't focus or even hold still. The stage lighting is horrible for the cameras and when people move they all blur. The sound favours the guy with the loud laugh next to them far more than the performers.
No, these do more of a disservice. (And then these bozos sell them for $25-$75! That’s why when I see someone doing it I alert the house manager.)
We need a program where shows are taped and then released on DVD and/or shown on PPV or PBS or some such channel after a decent run but no show should run 20 years. 3-4 years max. If they haven't seen it by then, buy the DVD.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Then what's the point of seeing a show if you KNOW it would be out on DVD in 5 years?
DVDs would belittle the impact live theatre has on audiences, and would dwindle audiences for years and years if shows were just automatically released on DVD.
You wanna see a show on DVD? Rent the Chicago movie, don't whine about why Broadway shows should be on DVD.

I would like to point out, frontrowcentre, thanks to advances in technology, some of the ones floating around of more recent shows are truly well shot, esp. the closing of "In My Life"...so while some aren't great, saying they do an injustice isn't totally fair either.
Actually, there is some truth to the possibility of PBS recording this. Nothing is set in stone yet, of course. I don't want to get my hopes up, but this would be so, so wonderful.
