Posted: 6/21/07 at 2:17pmExcellent points. And DVD's could help build interest not just in the shows, but in other shows from that composer and in those performers. It can help build interest when tourists go to NY and for when touring productions come through town. If having a legal DVD out there would actually hurt box office for a show, then the box office probably wasn't that strong to begin with.

The release of the video versions has never affected the core audience for a show. Years ago R&H held off selling the movie rights to OKLAHOMA! until they felt they had milked every $ from the Broadway and touring productions. The wisdom then was that once a film version was released no one would be interested in seeing the show on stage. In fact it has had just the opposite effect.
I think the bigger reason why more shows are not released is cost. We've all seen the pathetically small numbers most cast albums sell. Video versions would have to sell many more copies just to break even. It's just too risky.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Very true. All the same, I think we're hitting a point where it becomes more feasible. Equipment is less expensive, and could easily be set up, assuming you just want to film a performance and not shoot for a week to cut them together. (which I would be fine with). Also, with so many new digital distribution outlets, the cost of releasing is next to nothing. No one says they have to be on DVD on store shelves. There's gotta be SOME way to make these things happen. The best way to battle bootlegs is to make high quality recordings available. maybe even put a minimum amount of time between closing of the show and release. The last roadblock, IMHO, is the unions. I do believe the actors should be paid, obviously, but I feel like Equity would be the first roadblock to doing something like this with any consistency.

Posted: 6/23/07 at 1:41pmThey had cameras in last night to test some shots, etc. Final approvals and whatnot are still in the works, but it's looking good! I hope it works out.

Posted: 6/23/07 at 2:05pmI am so excited for this to happen! I loved the Sweeney production last year, and I was sad I wouldn't get to see Company, but now I may be able to! I absolutely love the actors playing instruments!

Since this telecast would not be part of the LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER series, it would definitely be on DVD, like FOSSE, SOUTH PACIFIC AT CARNEGIE HALL, CANDIDE, SWEENEY TODD, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, INTO THE WOODS, PUTTING IT TOGETHER, JEKYLL & HYDE, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, etc.
#94re: Does PBS want to record to COMPANY?
Posted: 6/23/07 at 2:52pmIt would probably air as a "great performances" first
#95re: Does PBS want to record to COMPANY?
Posted: 6/23/07 at 2:53pmRight; from what I understand, it would air and then go to DVD.

This sounds really good.
It's going to be amazing to have another Sondheim show preserved.

Has anyone bothered to ask any of the cast members while you're stalking, um, stagedooring after the show?
