Anyone else a bit bothered that they made a HUGE fuss about Day 1 ticket sales for Dolly (Bette) ? I seem to recall just about every news piece around that time touting how much they had in the bank before previews even began. They were not ashamed to talk about the $$$.

Music Man? Crickets.

I'm just a bit surprised since I was one of those people shucking out big bucks for a front row seat. That's not my grievance however. I'm curious (as I just looked on telecharge) ...seats selling wellllllll into January and February (rough months typically) . Why aren't they touting the financial success of pre sale tickets?

We're not quite on to the next lab, but I would LOOOOOVE to know the total in the bank!

But, really, it's not any of our business. I get your curiosity, but I guess they feel they don't need to?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

It’s important to remember that though it was announced in Jan 2016, tickets for Dolly did not go on sale until mid-Sept 2016 giving them only 6 months of sales before the show began previews in March 2017. Which is when I’d assume marketing and such would start to rev up anyway, not that they needed much help at all. Also, they had a theater in-tact.

Music Man, however, was announced in March 2019 and on-sale in Sept 2019 giving them nearly an entire YEAR before performances start in Sept 2020. This team is not stupid and knows what they are doing. That being said, I’m sure they only put a fraction of the available seats on sale back in September and are carefully monitoring their next load off. They still have 10 months before previews even begin so their “advance” may not be as high as you think at the moment. Though I’m sure it’s more than some of us will see in a lifetime. They’ll get there, surely, but they have plenty of time to do it and flaunt all their success over the next 10+ months. Plus, I think the team knows the more they gloat now the more curious/frustrated some of the public will be that they don’t even know what theater they’re going to yet.

It's sort of a different situation.

DOLLY:
– The theatre was announced
– The on-sale happened in September ahead of March previews.
– 10 months of performances were on sale from day 1.

MUSIC MAN
– The theatre has not been announced. Thus, not all the seats are on sale yet.
– It went on sale a full YEAR before the start of previews.
– Only 5 months of perfs are on sale now (Sept-Feb)

It would be a waste of money and press to tout these numbers now, and anything less than DOLLY's numbers will look kind of paltry. Michael Riedel can write a column bragging about its advance next Summer. So, no, I'm not "bothered" at all. Rudin needs to focus on selling WEST SIDE (and yet another Laurie Metcalf play) instead...
