I listen to Dolores' version of "Not Since Nineveh" at least once a day. It's a religious experience.

I, too, would think that with a mother like that, she was probably spot on about knowing the psychology of Rose. I can hear it from that clip for sure. She gives me chills.

Not to get too off topic, but maybe people really should give Barbra Streisand a chance in this role (even though she's waaaaayyy too old.) Apparently, she had quite a Rose-like mother herself. I think performers like that probably do have a little something extra that the others can't pick up on unless you were raised in such an environment. Not to say the other women were bad, but knowing how a stage mother really ticks could give the performance a certain extra flair.

Having a mother like Rose would suggest a psychological connection to Louise or June, not necessarily "Mama."

I was in the hospital for a few days and caught two movies that I had never seen before. The first one on Monday featured Broadway actor Tom Ewell in a film about kids on baseball teams. Ann Miller, looking like she was ready to dance a specialty number, made up and with her trademark lacquered hair, played a divorcee who was a baseball mom. The picture was forgettable, but Miller was charming as usual.

The other movie was KISMET which I unfortunately caught halfway through so I missed Dolores Gray singing, "Not Since Nineveh", damnit. She did sing a number which must have been written just for the movie, since It was not in the Broadway score of KISMET. She scored, as usual. The movie of KISMET is pretty boring outside of the musical numbers. I saw the updated version of KISMET in the 1980's, directed by Geoffrey Holder and, despite its reputation as being a " dog", I liked it. The score works, thanks to Alexander Borodin.

I love much of "Kismet" the movie as well, but Vic Damone is a bit of a pill. The new song you reference is the terrific belt-ballad "Bored," which Dolores knocks out of several parks. The new dance music for the prospective brides (by Star Trek's Alexander Courage, I believe) is also phenomenal.

Gray's "Not Since Ninevah" is a great example of a singer wedded to a song. She's terrific. Also, her album "Warm Brandy" (re-released on the DRG label) is a beautiful recording of her in a more reflective, subdued mode.

If you like Dolores doing "Not Since Nineveh," you'll love her little bible lesson in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego."

(It also features a bunch of chorus boys with ridiculously tight butts doing Jack Cole-like choreography all over the floor.)

And then of course there's this Dolores's 1960s TV special rendition of Cole Porter's "Mack the Black," which kinkily features the tight-booted chorus boys behind her, whipping themselves--with whips!
