Well, it was far from brilliant. I can only speak for myself, but I didn't like most of the cast and I thought the script was pretty terrible.
I have to agree with those who posted before me; there really is no comparison between the arrangements and performances.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 11:01amI don't care what the conditions were or whether it was live, I personally enjoyed the Glee version much more. Don't get me wrong, I love live theatre, but the Glee version was just much more pleasing to the ear.

Agreed with Snarky.
Of *course* Glee wins. It would be a sad commentary on Hollywood TV production indeed if a heavily edited, single-camera scene requiring at least a day's worth of multiple takes shot on a controlled soundstage and featuring lip-synced performances against a heavily produced studio vocal track loses to a live performance, pulled out of context (if the audience isn't familiar with the show, have they any idea why James Carpinello is singing in Spanish?!), in the middle of a NYC plaza!

I vote for GLEE, mainly because I love the way Lea sounds on that song and the harmonies are tight as hell.
I agree with Hest882 though because I had no idea what was going on with the other singers and when he was singing in spanish? all his growling and crap, I had no idea that was even supposed to be in spanish. I was sitting here thinking "what did he say? thats not the right line!?!" So I feel like I should see it live before a real judgement but based off these videoes Glee wins.
However, Constantine is better than the lead male in Glee, but Lea kick's Amy's ass and throws her down a hill and then comes down the hill to kick her while she's down.

I love James, Constantine, and the whole quirky ROA cast so I prefer the ROA version. It's more entertaining overall than Glee's sanitized studio version. I thought Glee was a pretty good show and I wouldn't mind watching it again. I like the teacher.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 4:08pmIm voting for neither even though I love both. This song is quickly rising on my list of over played songs. Someone needs to tell Journey to be more selective... these arent even the only two shows using it... it was in a commercial and mentioned in another tv series. Ugh.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 4:33pmThe song's been around since 1981 and has been very heavily used in pop culture since then. This is hardly a new thing.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 4:49pmKad, sure its been used before but rarely has it been so central to so many things at the same time. It surely wasnt heavily used just after its release, but yeah its been here and there since the mid-90s. Someone just got a little trigger happy with their licensing in the past month or so because its been everywhere. Too much for me.

Not that this is related to which you prefer, but...

What a ridiculous question this thread poses.
If you are to make a comparison, at least give both a fair playing field. ROA is outside on a makeshift stage, with awful sound quality, first thing in the morning.
Glee is a fully produced under the best conditions performance.
That situation notwithstanding, I've seen the ROA song under the best conditions, and it blows the vanilla Glee version out of the water. No comparison as far as I'm concerned.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 6:59pmGod damn it people, it isn't hard! Which one did you like better, plain & simple. It isn't a trick question, quit making excuses for people choosing Glee over RoA.

"It isn't a trick question, quit making excuses for people choosing Glee over RoA."
Um, the point is that of course the majority of people will like the Glee version better when you present the ROA version under the worst circumstances possible.
I think I'll post an open audition for a tour of Wicked with a video of the broadway version and see which we like better.
Yes, far fetched analogy but you get the point, I hope.

that makes much more sense in the context of the show trust me. it's not really a spoiler, but i won't mention it here. if you want to know PM me.

Posted: 5/27/09 at 7:13pmIt actually is hard "defying gravity" if you have any sense of what it takes to sing live at the crack of dawn vs singing in a studio with auto-tune, pro-tools, mixing, and mastering. Those who fail to see the inequity of this comparison are either ignorant or bias. (I am a fan of ROA, no secret, but I would never compare a live morning show performance to a studio created performance shot on film and edited properly no matter what the shows are... that is just silly)

I think most of us are sharp enough to imagine how ROA's version would sound under "the best conditions".
Regardless of conditions, the arrangement is the same as it is in the theatre.
The harmonies in the Glee treatment are far more complex and interesting, as is the staging.
