That sounds interesting, and it's good to know it's an original, though I also feel like Frankel and Korie are developing a boatload of shows at the moment.
Interesting how a star as big as LuPone would still have to audition even for a supporting role.
Word on the street is Murphy is playing the Diane Wiest role in BULLETS, so probably is a story morphed from both of them auditioning.
I think its great Patti put herself out there. Why the hell not?
I love the whole idea of this.

MB, I don't know. From what I was told, it was Murphy who said she was doing this with LuPone.
Personally I think if the role is great and the project could be something special, one should swallow the pride and audition if required. For some reason I just thought Patti LuPone wouldn't do it at this stage of her career.
Even Patti Le Pew isn't right for every role so an audition with creators/creatives help see if even a "star" is the right fit for a role.
Not to threadjack, but I'd be a little disappointed if Murphy was playing Helen Sinclair. I love her, but after seeing Martha Plimpton's incredibly theatrical presentation on the Tonys, I don't want to see anyone but her in that role.
I'm obsessed with Murphy and I'm obsessed with BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, so I'd pass out of excitement if she played Helen Sinclair. However, the prospect of her doing a show with LuPone sounds so ridiculously great, too good to be true maybe? Hopefully not, though as long as Murphy comes back to the stage I'll be happy, it's impressive that she's made a conscious decision to devote herself to new works.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I do remember when Christine Ebersole and Murphy were up for Tonys, Theatremania.com asked the nominees to choose what nominated role besides their own they'd want to play and Murphy picked the Ebersole role in GREY GARDENS. It'd be neat to see her work with the authors of that show.
Martha Plimpton is a bit young for Helen Sinclair. She's supposed to be more mature.
Plimpton's only five years younger than Dianne Wiest was when the movie came out.
She's more girlish than Wiest was. She just doesn't strike me as being quite right for the role. I like her but this is not a good role for her.
Interesting, I don't find Plimpton girlish (I didn't even find her girlish when she was young). And I think she's perfect for the role with all the theatricality, star quality and maturity required. I don't doubt for a minute that Murphy could play Helen with one hand tied behind her back in her sleep, but it would be so exciting to see what Plimpton would do with it. Plimpton, by the way (or perhaps somewhat tellingly), was great as Wiest's daughter in Parenthood.

I think Murphy is more appropriate for the role in many ways. That said, I'd like to be proven wrong, especially since I'd rather see Donna Murphy in a new piece with an original score.
According to the book, these 2 Grand Dames of the cosmetic world never met, though fierce rivals--Patti Lupone is absolutely perfect for Madam Rubenstein.
Not least because it'd be great to see her with her "Evita" hairstyle again.

"According to the book, these 2 Grand Dames of the cosmetic world never met".
Well, we might have to leave it that way in reality, too, for the sake of everyone involved. (I have doubts about these two working together.)
Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots never met either, but Schiller worked it out.
I'd love to see these two great performers on the same stage.
Sadly, it's not Murphy for BULLETS either.
That sucks. I'd love to see her in the role.
Every time I think of LuPone and Murphy together in War Paint I get so excited I have to...well Trixie Delight said it best in Paper Moon - "Ooh Daddy, this baby's gotta winky-tink."

Or the best possible way. Think of all the message threads generated by the gossip.
