That's why I rarely look at these threads anymore, doodle. They disgust me.
It's either superior snobs, lecturing me on why their opinion is right and mine is flawed, or it's some ugly personal attacks to somehow prove an unprovable point.
It all stems from pitiful insecurity, but it's boring as hell and very tedious.

Well well, I'd forgotten that Shanley had also directed JOE VS. THE VOLCANO. I'm sure DOUBT will live up to the standard of JOE etc.

I am seeing Burn After Reading this evening and hope the DOUBT trailer is shown. I don't have sound on my computer at work now and my home computer is being rebuilt (ugh!). I am not crazy about Hoffman's casting, but I will see it anyway. Loved him in Capote, Flawless and Mr. Ripley. He is a versatile actor. He may just pull this off. He seems to be able to do anything he wants. We'll see!

Is Shanley doing a remake of PROOF as well? How fascinating!

"Regarding the score, the print I saw still had the Philip Glass score...which sounded like a Philip Glass score."
I love Philip Glass, and have recently noticed that a lot of composers have been mimicking (either intentionally or unintentionally) his sound. I think Glass could write a phenomenal score for Doubt, much like his music for Notes on a Scandal, but if Howard Shore is, indeed, writing it, I think he'll do well, too.
And, in regards to Meryl playing the role like Cherry - we have all seen what Meryl playing a role theatrically on film looks like, and more than one critic called it the worst performance of her career. She knows what she's doing. As much as I loved Cherry in the role, I trust Meryl. It's in good hands.

Shanley also said he wanted Meryl for the original production to begin with. He wrote the role with her in mind not finding out until later that she was not open to doing stage work at the time.

Oh, wow, I didn't know that! Thanks, Byron. That's really interesting.

yeah, I read somewhere else that Shanely really kept having Streep in mind when he was writing the play. Now apparently he has had his dream come true to have streep casted in the film version.
Even Cherry Jones mentioned several times in those interviews that she definitely was not the first choice for the role of Sister Aloysius.
After seeing the trailer, I can't help imagining how Streep infused that surprising moment Smaxie mention with her own interpretation and particularly how Streep rendered that thought-provoking last scene "I have doubts. I have such doubts."

Come on, JOE VS. THE VOLCANO is not all that bad. It is just a quirky film that should not be everyone's cup of tea.
Doubt will be much better than JOE, that is for sure.

I found the screenplay online. It's teriffic. And it's not a play. It's not the PROOF movie.
On paper, Sister Aloysius is a firm, ruler-weilding Principal to the students. To the other teachers, and Father Flynn, she's pleasant, but you still know who's boss.
I don't think it's Miranda in a nun's outfit. Miranda wouldn't give a second thought to talking to Andy's mother, much less spending time with kids.

I cannot believe I read that whole thing, but I think its fantastic. Although I was a tad skeptical over this adaptation considering Doubt is my favorite play, but I think it is turning out the way it should be.

Shanley says during filming Streep would carry Sister Aloysius's antagonism towards Father Flynn into her relations with Philip Seymour Hoffman, 'trying to psych him out. She kept muttering things to him like, "I know you did it" and "I'm going to get you." Philip just ignored her or chuckled.'

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
