I agree with Foster. I'm not impressed - it looks stagy and long, very similar to the recent film adaptation of Bug. I'm sure it'll have great performances, but it'll just be...long and dull. and I'm upset that they aren't doing the accents. I also agree that Adams seems to be in the finest shape of the three.

Just how does a movie look long from a trailer?
I love how people are saying what the film WILL be based on the trailer. How quick to dismiss everyone is.
I've seen plenty of bad films with incredible trailers. And I've seen some incredible films with bad trailers.
Let's not forget John Patrick Shanley wrote the play, the screenplay and directed the film adaptation. These changes in the characters may be changes that HE wanted and not what the actors chose to do.
I think Meryl looks fierce and her scenes with Hoffman look like they're dripping with intensity. Adams looks fantastic as well. I think we've got a killer cast with an amazing track record. The odds are in our favor that it'll turn out to be a good film.
A bunch of scene snippets that, as a whole, seem to go nowhere.

I saw and loved the original Broadway production. Cherry Jones one of the most incredible and powerful performances I've ever seen in any medium.
I thought the trailer looked great. Do I expect to love the film as much as the play? No. Do I think Meryl Streep's performance will carry the sam power and umph of Jones'? No.
But it still looks like a great film with great performances, in their own right.
But, of course, really judging the film based on this trailer is rather dumb.
Am I the only one who thinks the trailer was incredible?
I am so excited for this movie. I think it's going to be a heavyweight Oscar contender and from what I hear, Streep is absolutely brilliant.
Could Streep and Langella win in the same year? That'd be amazing...
I think it looks phenomenal though...I'm sure it's nothing short of great.
I think the trailer is a little underwhelming. Something about the score....I, of course, am very excited to see Streep's interpretation of the role.
I'm going to see the film BEFORE I review it. Trailers are notorious for not being an adequate assessment of the actual film. Having said that, I am excited about seeing this film.
Let's also recall that Mr. Shanley has an Oscar. He's not new to film.
Interesting that Viola Davis isn't listed with the others. Early buzz is pointing toward her being the one that steals the entire film and could be the biggest contender for actually winning an Oscar for her short role. People I know that have seen it say that her scenes are absolutely devastating...
I wouldn't be surprised if all four of the lead characters are up for Oscars.
The trailer is getting better on repeated viewings. I'm excited for this.

AHHH! I saw it tonight just after the Frost Nixon trailor at Burn After Reading...and am super siked!!
Meryl Streep is the BEST actress on the face of the earth! The fact that ANYONE is bad mouthing her shocks me greatly.
It's a transistor radio, not an iPod. And yes, they had them back then. They first came around in the '50s.
As for the crow... It's mentioned (and now seen) in the scene between Father Flynn and Sister James in the courtyard, just as in the play.
Streep and Adams both sport slight New York accents in the film. Not quite as broad as in the play, but they are still there.

A dull trailer for what will almost certainly be a dull film. I was planning on missing this flick anyway, based on the tired uninspired casting, dull source material, and first-time director. We'll see.

As if we expected anything less than negative from Roscoe.
Do us all a favor Roscoe and don't even see it. That way we can be spared your pissy rants about how bad it was in every thread mentioning the film.
I'm surprised at how "small" Meryl looks in the role. And by "small" I don't mean "in stature," I mean "in presence."
Cherry Jones was a force of nature on stage. A larger than life nun who took over any room or situation she was in.
Meryl looks more cunning and calculating. A strong woman, but not a "wall" of virtue. More like a weasel than a lion.
...and I'm not sure how well that's going to work overall. We'll see...
With Cherry Jones, you had the feeling you were facing the entire "church" and everything it stood for. With Meryl, it's more like your fighting a bitter old nun.
She may be more "human" than Cherry (theatrical) Jones, but it might actually shrink the story down, as a result. I want this to be a larger-than-life person facing larger-than-life issues.
I agree with those who say it just doesn't feel quite right.
I'm surprised, on the other hand, how good Hoffman looks. He's still not my first (or second or third) choice for the role, but he seems to have inhabited it very well.
Amy Adams looks great, but that character IS an observer, and she doesn't seem to be observing the colossal battle of the stage show. This is playing more like a battle between normal people, rather than "institutions of thought."
Yeah, that's a lot from just a trailer, and I look forward to seeing the whole movie.
And I hope it goes beyond my "okay" expectations of it, after having seen this.

Meryl Streep has nothing on Donna Murphy.
The film looks fantastic!
And, for anyone to say that the trailer looks boring, it's "stagey" - I'm not sure what that means....., or Meryl isn't as fierce as Cherry, it's not polished enough, etc....... I have one question for you........What LA LA Land are you living in? How could anybody know that, without seeing the final film?
If you think that you can do better, go out and film it yourself and let us know when it's ready for viewing. In the meantime, keep your mouth shut.

best12bars:
Film acting and theatre acting are different in their nature. If Meryl Streep chooses the same acting approach as Cherry Jone did in protraying Sister Aloysius, the performance will appear to be very very over the top, theatrical and campy on the big screen. I think streep's acting will be more nuanced and delicate than Cherry's.
I think Smaxie has already seen the movie, so do you agree with me? What's your take on this issue based on the whole performance of Streep in the film?

Now Howard Shore (lord of the rings) has been confirmed to do the music for the film. So smaxie, had they already used Shore's music when you attended the advanced screening? What's the effect of the music?

Wannabeafoster - did you audition for the film and were rejected? Is that where your misguided anger is coming from? Did you want to dress up as a nun?
Ilovewithjerry - your posts are always really cool. But, Man...when you saw it looks long and
stagey, gotta realize how ridiculous that sounds, don't you? How do you know..you haven't seen the completed film, have you?
