Fun fact: if (probably safe to say when at this point ...) Hamilton wins Best Musical, it will be the first Off-Broadway production to do so since Little Shop of Horrors in 1983.

These awards lost all credibility when Kelli didn't even get a nomination.

Yeah... that seemed crazy. But I second the congrats to Kristin Chenoweth. I liked the little parody of Lin-Manuel Miranda.
ETA: though I missed part of the speech because my feed paused... which it just did again on Joel Grey. GRRR.

Seriously-- missed the announcement for who it was, saw the guy say something about the Public Theatre... and then nothing again. What the heck?! Are you guys having difficulty too?

I actually had almost no trouble at all, which is weird. Usually I experience the same glitches that have been reported tonight.
In any event, congratulations to Lin Manuel Miranda, The Public and all involved with HAMILTON. And the other winners.

no it won't, RENT (1996) and ONCE (2012) started at NYTW. And Spring Awkening (2007) premiered at Atlantic Theater Company, and In The Heights (2008 ) started at 37 ARTS

Gotta love a live feed. I missed the announcement of who won due to a freeze, although no surprised to see who it was finally.
All in all, some nice choices. Hard to say how much this forcasts the Tonys since Fun Home wasn't eligible this year.

No Keli, but you had the girl from Side Show? Puh-lease. Elephant Man won? I thought that was one of the most boring shows I've seen in years. And Borle? He was the weakest link in that whole show. #stupid

LightsOut90, IN THE HEIGHTS did not win Best Musical. And all of those nominations were for those respective shows' Broadway engagements.
In any event, Oskar Eustis is right. HAMILTON will change the immigration discussion (if we can call it that) in this country. That's what's most moving and most exciting about it to me-- its diversity of style, influence and people.

But with a live feed..you can go back and re-watch the parts you missed...usually it's fine when you backtrack.. Just scroll back..

LightsOut90, I think what is meant here is that Hamilton is the first off-Broadway production to win the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical since Little Shop of Horrors.
ETA: redundant information, sorry!

I could be wrong, but I think all of the Off-Broadway shows that "won" transferred to Broadway in the same season as the off-broadway run, so the award was technically given to the Broadway productions.

Rent, Once and Spring Awakening were playing on Broadway by the time they won, as was Passing Strange which won in 2008. In the Heights lost the Drama Desk to Spring Awakening. Hamilton and Little Shop of Horrors are the only musicals to win based solely on an Off-Broadway production.

This. Most wins end up going to a b'way show.

Well, gee, huge congrats to HAMILTON, no doubt, but doesn't this take away an awful lot of the suspense for who will win next year's Tonys for Score and Musical? Hard to imagine anything will derail the Hamilton juggernaut.
Makes me happy to have a 2015 Tony's night rife with so many categories still up in the air.

It may but Christine Ebersole won every award there was for her for the off-Broadway run of Grey Gardens and yet there was still some suspense come Tony time a year later with Audra Macdonald and Donna Murphy getting raves and sharing the drama desk.

Hamilton is going to clean up at the Tonys. There's no doubt about that. Maybe not a Producers-esque all-encompassing sweep, but definitely the plurality of the awards, including the most important.

Someoneinatree2, I think Hamilton will take all of the suspense out of any awards it is in contention for in any season. My only real surprise is that Leslie Odom, Jr., did not win. (I didn't expect Miranda to win the acting award.)
