Forgive me as I am not familiar with the Drama Desk Awards but do they usually provide some sort of indication for the TONYS like people say the Golden Globes do for the Oscars?
^No. Not from my experience and memory. First of all, they include Off Broadway, the categories/eligibility are different and it's a very different pool of voters.
Also, the Golden Globes are almost never a good predictor of the Oscars. I think you're thinking of the Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild Awards which are usually phenomenal predictors of the Oscars.
I'd argue that the Golden Globes should still be taken into account when predicting the Oscars. Just like the Drama Desks. It's just an indication of what a pool of people within the industry like.
Of course, I'm not saying they're at all irrelevant (congratulations to all the winners by the way!) and they definitely provide a little bit of insight into where some sentiments are.
However, it's pretty ludicrous to call the Drama Desk Awards a good prediction of the Tonys when:
- The presumed biggest challenger to Matilda for best musical at the Tonys wasn't even nominated
- An Off-Broadway show won best music
- The two front runners for best actor in a musical were in different categories
- One of the front runners for best actress in a musical (Patina Miller) wasn't nominated
- The winning sound designers weren't even nominated
- An Off-Broadway show won lighting design
- Somehow no one from the cast of Vanya et al. was nominated
This gives Laura and MATILDA more of an edge going in to the Tony's. Very curious for Leading Actor.

No one was insinuating that it was an epidemic. I don't know a lot about the Drama Desk Awards so I asked a question.
A better indicator of the Tonys would be to count how many producers each show has

Yes I would agree with that statement^^.
The two male winners here for Musical were both placed in proper categories..best actor and best supporting...the way I saw the parts. Being the Matilda people chose to put Bertie in the lead category, it is going to be an interesting choice - especially since the two choices are equally talented but performing in totally different styles. The expression comparing apples to oranges does not do it justice.
"Obstructed for $89? Is it worth it? Oof!"
Couldn't say...I know a pair of 30 tickets were available for performances (must buy the pair) but they were on stage and required a lot of leaning. Sat there the first time I saw the show. Not bad for 30 bucks.
I hope they release the book to Matilda... The last three Tony-winning books had theirs released... Once, Mormon, Memphis..
