I didn't realize that, Foster
I didn't care for Homecoming personally, but I did think the whole cast did an excellent job (I felt the same about Seafarer, tho, too)
Thank you for the Drama Desk lesson :~)
Yeah, I was about to say ITH didn't WIN Best Ensemble last year. It was just awarded.
Conleth was my favourite thing about THE SEAFARER.
Ok, I've never heard of THE DINING ROOM, will that ensemble pose a real threat to the magnificance that was THE HOMECOMING's ensemble?
Conleth Hill was fantastic, but I thought Jim Norton was the best performance I had seen this season by an actor.

was Patrick Stewart ineligible or something? I'm sort of stunned he's not nominated.
I find myself warming to the Drama Desk crew as I say perhaps they just didn't find him that special.
Srsly, I've seen Stewart in three different Shakespeare plays now, 'Macbeth' included, and I wish he blew me away, but he really doesn't. :/ I'm hoping his Claudius will yet prove revelatory...
Kudos to Sierra Boggess for getting a nom on her first big show (which wasn't exactly loved by critics). She absolutely blew me away and really deserves it.
I don't think the 12 nominations for A Catered Affair mean that much in terms of its actually winning awards. Last year, LoveMusik led the Drama Desk nominations, also with 12 nominations.
For those surprised by Laurents not getting a director nod for Gypsy, he already won the DD for the 1975 revival.
Several people have posted that due to A Catered Affair's lead in the nominations, that it may have the edge in taking the prize. There is absolutely no correlation. Last year, Love Musik led the Drama Desk nominations with 12 nominations, and Spring Awakening was the big winner. Since most of the voters in the Drama Desk are NY based critics, I would argue that Passing Strange has the edge, given that PS had better overall reviews than A Catered Affair.
It's true that Off Broadway shows have received more attention in the nominations, given the weak season on Broadway, but I can't remember the last time--if ever---that the Drama Desk gave the best musical prize to an off broadway musical. Perhaps this is the year to do it. It would be a bold statement from an org that prides itself on recognizing achievement Off Broadway as well, and if that were true, then I would say Adding Machine has the advantage.
For the record, I'm with people who can't believe Jackie Hoffman was overlooked. I thought she was better than Testa and was not wowed by Kritzer or Winningham.
I was just gonna say the same about LOVEMUSIK, I was all excited because I thought it'd mean the show would get a Tony nod...and we all know how that went. So no reason to make anything out of the A CATERED AFFAIR nods.
I thought Harvey Fierstein had written the lyrics to A CATERED AFFAIR, but on playbill.com they credit Bucchino for Lyrics under the Best Lyrics category. Is that a typo or did Fierstein only write the book?
I love this nods actually, especially the XANADU love and all the Off-Broadway shows that got recognized. Notice how DIVIDING THE ESTATE got a nod under Best Play and not revival, guess this is the way it'll go at the Tonys.
I think it has become clear to me that CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF won't get any recognition at the Tonys. I was hoping Anika Noni Rose would get her well-deserved nod, but it isn't happening. Oh well.
I'm kinda glad for Sierra. She deserves to be recognized! And im so stoked that jenna russel is nominated as well...even though everyone knows that best actress in a musical is going to patti
I can't believe that Jim Norton didn't recieve a nom!
I've got to say I'm happy for Sierra, too. And I've got to say that I get really sick of seeing her last name spelt Bogus/Bogguss.
I don't really get how Sierra got a nod over Kerry Butler.

Congratulations to Matthew Morrison!!!!!
You knew it was coming
Overall though, the nominations were a surprise. IMO, Sierra, really? Not in comparison to who she's in the category with... or at all.
Congrats to South Pacific and Kelli O'Hara!! Interesting that Matt and Paulo are pinned against each other for two vastly different musicals.
I was shocked about Young Frankenstein, but overall it's a year of revivals
Well, LOVEMUSIK did win two Drama Desks last year.
I agree that ADDING MACHINE should win Best Musical.
Funny that THE SEAFARER didn't get a BEST PLAY nomination.
Oh, and to whoever asked, The Dining Room is a play by AR Gurney in which five or six actors play dozens of roles in a series of scenes, all of which take place in a dining room. It's actually a pretty cool play...
I also thought it was interesting that THE 39 STEPS was considered a "Unique Theatrical Experience" over a play.

Sierra deserves it..but NOT over Kerry Butler.. anyday.. whats the deal there?
I think the whole awards thing this year is kindof messed up!
I was just about to post that, WBAF.
LoveMusik took home two prestigious awards (one for Murphy and one for Cerveris as Leading Actress and Actor). It's not like it went home empty handed. And like I said, I think Passing Strange will get recognized for its score, lyrics, and orchestrations but since Affair doesn't have much of a chance of winning any technical awards (too small not enough glitz) or performance awards (maybe Wopat, but don't hold your breath) I think they'll give it Best Musical. And rightfully so. It's the best of the nominated shows.
Murphy did win her well-deserved award for Best Leading Actress last year (which I had completely forgotten about, I loved her speech!), but Cerveris did not win for Best Leading Actor, that award went to Raul Esparza.
The other Drama Desk earned by LOVEMUSIK was for Jonathan Tunick's fantastic orchestrations.
I was under the impression the Wopat's role in A Catered Affair was leading...
Will he be considered featured for the Tony's as well?
His name is above the title so by default he is considered leading, unless the producers petition him as featured. I assume they'll keep him as leading (especially after the glowing reviews/comments he has been getting re "I Stayed) and then have Fierstein and Cavenaugh for the featured categories.
Drama Desks and Tonys always have disparities. Last year Gavin Lee and Debra Monk both won awards for Featured roles, and then they earned Tony nods in the leading categories.
