ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE Reviews

Hopefully they're at least mixed or mixed to positive. I had a lot of fun the other night at this show. It's nothing great, but it doesn't deserve pans either.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The reviews will be BAD.

I wonder if Best New Musical can have 3 nominees this year, if that much lol

All that talk that maybe Groundhog Day should've waited another year... maybe people were right.

According to the rules, the number of nominees in each of the four “Best Show” categories shall be determined in the following manner:

1. Where there are nine or more eligible productions in a Best Show category, the Nominating Committee will be instructed to cast one vote each for four eligible shows as nominees on his/her secret ballot. Such ballot shall be collected and tabulated by a representative of the Accounting Firm. The four eligible shows with the highest number of votes will automatically be designated as the nominees in such category. A fifth nominee shall be added to the category in the event that the Accounting Firm determines that the difference in votes between the fourth highest ranked show and the fifth highest ranked show is three votes or less.

2. Where there are five or fewer eligible productions in a Best Show category, the Nominating Committee will be instructed to cast one vote each for three eligible shows as nominees on his/her secret ballot. Such ballot shall be collected and tabulated by a representative of the Accounting Firm. The three eligible shows with the highest number of votes will automatically be designated as the nominees in such category. A fourth nominee shall be added to the category in the event that the Accounting Firm determines that the difference in votes between the third highest-ranked show and the fourth highest-ranked show is three votes or less.

3. The number of nominees in each of the four “Best Show” categories shall be determined as the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall also have the sole discretion to reduce the number of nominees to fewer than four (or five), but, in no event, fewer than two, in a particular category for the current season or to delegate this discretion to the Nominating Committee.

Of course, given how commercial the Tonys truly are, it’s unlikely to happen, but could. Since there are 7 shows eligible for Best Musical this year, it seems (likely) that there will only be four nominees this year.

Yeah, what a crappy season for new musicals. The Band's Visit is a lock. I'd say Spongebob is close to being a lock. Then there's the rest: Margaritaville, Frozen, Mean Girls, Summer, ummm...Home For the Holidays?, Rocktopia?

Spongebob is hardly a lock (though I’d say it’s likely.)

i think the most probable scenario is that The Band’s Visit, Mean Girls and Frozen are all virtual shoo-ins (regardless of the reviews for the latter two, honestly- yes they’re film to stage properties, but they’re being mounted by established producing and creative teams, with at least very respectful out of town reviews).

The final slot is likely between Spongebob and Margaritaville, (unless Summer winds up being some sort of unlikely On Your Feet/Beautiful-type surprise with the critics)... with Spongebob, as you said, probably having the edge for the final nomination.

I forgot about SpongeBob.

I guess is Bands Visit, Mean Girls, Frozen and Spongebob.

Margaritaville and Summer won't happen.

Geez, what a mess of a season.

ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE Reviews

“But if you’re not drunk or a Parrothead, as Mr. Buffett’s fans are called, you’re in trouble. Mr. Buffett’s denatured country-calypso ditties and horndog smarm seem awfully lowbrow, even in a Broadway environment debased for decades by singing cats and candlesticks.”

I hate this idea that every show on Broadway has to be of a certain quality to appease the highbrows who believe everything on Broadway has to adhere to their standards. I haven’t seen this show, and it may very well be awful, but there’s room enough on Broadway for shows like The King and I, as well as Cats, Beauty and the Beast and, yes, even Escape to Margaritaville.
