I also think John Lloyd Young will get a lot of votes for Best Actor. Not saying he'll win, but I don't think anyone is a lock in that category anymore.
I know the actress race is very tight but is Patti the big front runner?

Personally, I think top actress is going to be a surprise this year. Everyone seems to be thinking patti, my heart is set on LaChanze, but I'd reeeeeeally love to see maria win so much.

Friedman very well may have won if WiW was still going to be open in June. Closing early probably cost her any chance at an award. I would think Lupone is still the favorite, with LaChanze as the runner-up.

Bad bet. Thomas Mitchell won a Tony for Best Actor in a Musical in 1953 for his non-singing role in Hazel Flagg.

do you really think color purple is a lock? i don't at all.. actually i hope it does not get nominated for best musical. i think that right now jersey boys is the only lock until we see tarzan, drowsy and wedding singer. but color purple?
I'd say the only locks to win right now are Sweeney Todd for best revival, and Manoel Felciano for featured actor in a musical. (with Michael Ball practically out of the running.) Which, of course, makes me giddy with joy. I'd say John Doyle is probably going to win best director, but for some reason, I wouldn't call it an absolute lock.
There are a lot of horse races in the other categories.I'm still pissed that they decided to run Chita Rivera's show in the musical category, thus depriving Miss Rivera of any chance at winning a Tony.
I also predict Bob Martin will win for Best Actor in a Musical as well... for a non-singing, non-dancing performance.
It's completely brilliant.
ddtruitt --- If all you think he's doing is "witty banter" and non-acting... you definitely didn't see his performance even remotely the way I did.... and it sounds like you left (or "tuned out") before the end of the show, too.
What about Shuler Hensley and/or Chester Gregory being nominated for Featured Actor? I know Tarzan hasn't opened yet, but just speculating based on what I've heard from some "in the know".

I really don't want Michael Cerveris to win. Maybe I just saw him on an off night-but I really didn't think he was that great. He definetely deserves a nomination, but a win? I don't think so.
Manoel Felciano on hte other hand should with out a doubt win featured actor.
I'm rooting for Jersey Boys.
"Oh, by the way, you are right best12bars, I did see a READING of Drowsey that was an abridged version of the show...so I did not see the ending...but I loved Bob Martin...I just don't see him winning best actor in a musical against the others."
...That explains a lot.
I hope Color Purple will walk away with at least Leading Actress in a Musical award

It's honestly to early to predict some of these categories. And I will not even attempt the tech awards. But the above is what, as of now, I think deserves and should be nominated.

I personally think that the Leading Actor/Actress categories are races between John Lloyd Young and Michael Cerveris and LaChanze and Patti LuPone, respectively.

I agree with you, although Cerveris did just win a supporting statue for Assasins the year before last. This could encourage voters to spread the wealth. I thought both perfomances were amazing.
Actress race is also a tough call--LaChanze really ACTS a great role and what she gets to sing--she gives her heartfelt all. That really shows.
Patti is a dream in a dream role. Not only does she give a totally different twist to the role (although the whole production does that) she totes that tuba like a trooper!

I don't think I said this in this thread yet..
But I think Roz Ryan will have a great chance for a Best Featured Actress nomination.
Some are saying shes steals the show. The woman is one sassy and fantastic performer.
Actually, I could predict some winners.
Score:
Drowsy Chaperone
Book:
Jersey Boys
Lighting:
Color Purple
Direction (Musical):
John Doyle
For Supporting Actor in a Musical, Chester Gregory will probably get the nod, over Shuler Hensley.
I'm not certain that Drowsy's score is its best feature. The critics in L.A. didn't go wild over the songs, though they found them generally pleasant. Drowsy's book was well received, but I think Jersey Boys still is the one to beat in that category.
I also think John Lloyd Young might just have a lock on Best Actor in a Musical.
I absolutely agree with Chester Gregory getting the nod over Shuler Hensley for Featured Actor in a Musical. And Beth Leavel over Sutton Foster for Featured Actress (unless they both get the nod, which I'd love to see happen!).
Other picks:
Leading Actor in a Musical:
John Lloyd Young
Stephen Lynch
Harry Connick, Jr.
Micheal Cerveris
Alan Cumming
Actress in a Musical:
Patti Lupone
Jenn Gambatese
La Chanze
Maria Friedman
Chita Rivera
If TARZAN lives up to the promise and the buzz I'm hearing from some industry insiders - it could pull another LION KING and clean up at the Tonys - even pushing John Doyle from the Best Director win.
