EDEN ESPINOSA CAROL KANE DERRICK WILLIAMS
To Join The Broadway Production Of ‘WICKED’ On Tuesday, January 10
On Tuesday, January 10, three new principal cast members will join the Broadway company of the smash-hit musical WICKED at the Gershwin Theatre (222 W. 51st St.). Eden Espinosa, who recently played the role of Elphaba to great acclaim in the San Francisco engagement of the show’s national tour, will assume the role in the Broadway production. Ms. Espinosa, who starred in the Broadway production of Brooklyn, was also the original Standby for Elphaba on Broadway. Carol Kane, well-known for her Emmy-winning role on TV’s “Taxi” and such films as Annie Hall and Hester Street (for which she received an Academy Award nomination), will become Broadway’s new Madame Morrible, a role she originated WICKED’s national tour. Derrick Williams will assume the role of Fiyero in the Broadway production. Mr. Williams had previously understudied the role on Broadway and was the original Fiyero in the show’s national tour.
Shoshana Bean (Elphaba) and Megan Hilty (Glinda) currently star with Tony Award winner Ben Vereen (the Wizard) in WICKED on Broadway, with Rue McClanahan (Madame Morrible) and David Ayers (Fiyero), Michelle Federer (Nessarose), Sean McCourt (Dr. Dillamond) and Robb Sapp (Boq).

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. Directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento, WICKED is currently being presented on Broadway, on a national tour, and in a separate, open-ended engagement at Chicago’s Ford Center for Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre.
Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.
EDEN ESPINOSA (Elphaba) made her Broadway debut in Wicked as Standby for both Elphaba and Nessarose. She recently played Elphaba to great acclaim in the San Francsico engagement of the show’s national tour. Now what would you say if today I started over?
Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover
And I'll pretend like everything is already alright
And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight
I saw Eden in San Francisco and she was really good. She made one tiny mistake that I would not have even noticed if I hadn't memorized the whole musical. I'm glad she's doing it.
It is nearly impossible to get good seats. I won't pay "premium" to sit in the same seats I saw the show before. Yet all of the other available seats (at over $100) are at the back of the theater or on the sides------ How long do you think Eden will be playing this role? I saw both her and Idina and loved them both.
I am so happy for Eden. She deserves this big chance after all the Bklyn crap. This is a better suited role for her as well. Congrats to her and the new castmembers.
THIS IS THE BEST NEWS I COULD HAVE EVER READ THIS MORNING! I'M SO HAPPY FOR HER! Her mom told me at the last day of the SF Tour that "She loves this role so much" and now, this! *dances around room* And to make things even better, Derrick got his gig too! He's been with this company from the beginning since SF Try-outs and now! Oh, what a gift!

Thanks for the info guys.. I just bought tickets for Jan 18...partial view Row C for $55 each.. yeah! She is my 2nd favorite Elphaba next to Idina. Updated On: 11/28/05 at 03:10 PM
I'm glad she got the role. I saw her in BKLYN and at the Broadway Cabaret Festival- I liked her Defying Gravity better than Idina's..and that's saying a lot. She's pretty amazing, if you ask me. Yay Eden!
The ONLY thing that could have been better was if Stephanie came to Broadway but I knew that wasn't going to happen!:/
What is your dream role?
My dream role would be to be myself. To be performing at the Hollywood Bowl and to have an audience there just to see me, as Stephanie. They are there because they like what I do as a singer, an artist and a person (the last being the most important). I enjoy escaping and portraying other characters, but to be accepted and wanted as yourself... that's amazing! --Stephanie J. Block
Just one of the many reasons I admire and respect Stephanie!!
