O I would see that, WayTooBroadway. Then again, I'm just eagerly awaiting her Broadway return.

Read all three spanish articles. It states she is slated to go to Spain to do PIAF then she's off to London again to star in the Donmar Warehouse production of Stephen Sondheim's PASSION. Then she's slated to star in a 2012 Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's EVITA.
IMO the recording does not do the production or Ms. Roger justice. When I saw her live she just WOWED me from beginning to end. I hope this materializes and she gets her chance to bring it to the Great White Way.
Louise Dearman for Evita! I saw her play the role on the UK National Tour and she was brilliant, having received standing ovations each night! :)

Not sure Karen Olivo can belt as high as Eva requires (sustained E's and a couple F's). Mandy Gonzalez or Eden Espinosa could probably handle it though (though I like Karen's voice the best of the 3)
I can't wait for this to come to broadway with Elena. I actually like how she sounds on the cast recording. Its my favorite recording of evita, next to the movie soundtrack with Madonna
I think I would rather see the Hal Prince staging brought back.
I would love to see Hal Prince's staging brought back, but I also wish there was someone else who could do the material justice in a different way. I'd hate for it to only be Hal Prince's way or a complete bust.
Evita was very white and from Argentina. Why do people keep saying that an actress with Caribbean backgrounds and a totally different look, should play her?

You're right. I mean, that American lady from Long Island who played her on Broadway looked exactly like Eva. People actually swore she was from Argentina.
Patti looked a lot like Evita when she was younger.
When I saw her in the London production, one thing really bothered me. The character is supposed to be "one of the people", yet she was clearly a foreigner. She did the whole show with a strong Argentinian accent. Yet NO ONE in the rest of the cast did. How did that make any sense?
The same way it made sense that Bob Gunton sounded like Ricky Ricardo in the original Broadway production.
I.e., it didn't.
But at least Elena's accent is real. It didn't bother me. I guess you could put it down to her being from the provinces, if you needed an explanation to make it work for you.
Bob Gunton's accent is one of my all time favorite things. Not even about Evita, just ever.
I saw Roger in London and while I understand not liking her based on listening to the CD, in person she was a force of nature. I found her incredibly interesting to watch in the role. Her voice certainly wasn't pleasant but it went with her portrayal.

Hi to everyone. First of all, I'm argentinian, and I admire Elena's talent.
Now, I want to say the following: Elena played Evita during 2006. After that, she'd played Boeing-Boeing, in London too. After that, she starred Piaf, again in London. During the time she'd spent in England, her english pronunciation had become better and better. So I think that if the people comment about her voice and pronunciation, saying it's horrendous, etc etc etc, by only listening to the London recording, they should wait until Evita is on the stage. Honestly, since her last performance of Evita in London, and the future first performance in Broadway, it had passed 5 or even 6 years! She'd had time to improve her english knowledge. Do not prejudge her because you didn't like her singing in the Evita's recording.
It's known, here in Argentina, that she had been improving her english so she could be succesful there in Broadway. And she had a bit more of time before she play again Evita.
Wait for her, and she will astonish you, once more.
I do not want to offend anyone with my comments. Sorry me if I do it.
I hope my English writting would be better, but it's the best i can. I think it's comprehensible for you. Sorry if not.
From Argentina,
Nacho.

Elena was a powerhouse and the whole production is beautiful.... The set is gorgeous and the costumes stunning...
I felt very priveliged to see her in Evita...

I love Evita, this show and Sunset are only ones I really like from ALW, but I was sadly disappointment with the 2006 West End revival.
The direction was boring, the choreography I thought was not of the time and too plain, the set was represetitive of the time. The numbers didn't have the impact needed (New Argentina just had the cast waving hands a flags... no banners or bussling atomsphere) and I did like Elena Roger but she didn't have the star presence at all.
I understood MANY more words of Elena Roger's Buenos Aires than I ever did of Patti Lupone's. Her accent is not a problem.

That's one of my favorite things about Patti's recording. I love it when she goes bonkers and all you hear are vowels. It reminds me of the time I saw this working girl flip out on a john on 8th Ave waving a switchblade. The only phrase I could decipher was "I WILL CUT YOU!" The rest was unintelligible, but no less effective or thrilling.
^^ I'm pretty sure Patti sings "I WILL CUT YOU" several times in the OBC recording.
And her diction on the recording is INFINITELY better than when she sang Buenos Airies on the Tonys that one year. I swear I was in a hen house!!!

I saw the London revival with Elena in it and I have to say I really liked both! Elena's accent is, for some reason, much thicker on the recording than what it was in the live performance. I think she did a terrific job in the role. The whole production was excellent. Hope it makes its way to Broadway!
Mandy Gonzalez would be one hell of a matinee alternate for Roger.
