ABSOLUTELY! Spring Awakening sorta, but mostly Twilight (which isnt Broadway...)
^ Yet.
Rent. Now In the Heights. Seeing the show every single night doesn't make you fan, it makes you a stalker.
Raises hand to shamefacedly admit to thinking CATS was incredible. (and for it's time, it was....we just SO very quickly outgrew it!)
I think the basic age of the SA fans killed it for me. All to concerned with the actors on a personal level. I LIKED [tos] quite a bit; but the fans annoyed the crap out of me.
Yeah, I think the TOS creators would rather be nine people's favourite thing than a hundred people's creepy stalker obsession.
I always feel embarrassed to be called a fan of SA or [tos] simply because they're the kind of shows that really attract some crazy people as fans. I'm an avid fan and supporter of both shows (I've seen SA 11 times and was at [tos]'s closing night cheering my lungs out), but I just get so embarrassed to even wear my show shirts anymore because of everyone else that does. However, I would NEVER start disliking a show just because of the fanbase.
(Ironically, I'm wearing my "A-D-D-D-D-F#-A" shirt from [tos] at this very moment.)

I am embarrassed to say that I am a Rent fan and that I ahve seen the show a few times. This is because I went in the beginning of the tween freaky fangirls and I thought that the way that they were acting was wrong and that they were just over the top and out of line. Never did I associate myself with them nor did I act like them in any way. But, I got strange looks when I told people I was a Rent fan.

I'm an avid [tos] fan. I'm not crazy, but I really enjoy it. Haha, I was Jeff for Halloween...yeah.
For the longest time I despised Wicked because of the kreepy (yes, with a 'k') fans, and the Idina fanatics. I'd even come across a song and convince myself I didn't like it. Not so much now, I decided to ignore the fans and appreciate the work of art that it is, which is kind of how I feel about all shows.
And...ok, I absolutely love the Lord of the Rings Musical in London.
Who waited outside the houses of the [title of show] cast? That is freaking creepy.
Greetings from DisneyWorld !!!
Great thread--- never really felt tht creeped out by "Xanadu" despite seeing the show so many times. We were like a little (weird) family.
Right now, its "Rock of Ages"- Love the show, but getting the "creeps" bigtime !!!
Right now, the old gaggle of Jersey Boys fans really scare me/piss me off. These people are a lot older and are acting like insane little tweens. At least, the ones I'm aware of. =P
Throwing panties and leopard print bras is NOT amusing and NO, they WILL NOT FRAME THE PANTIES.
Kristin Chenoweth. I love her to death, but some of her fans are worse than Idina Menzel's fans. Seriously.

Oh the shame....
I will submit one that hasn't been mentioned: Altar Boyz. One summer during college, I saw this show way more times than needed, since I had Mondays off and if I got bored and decided to catch something last minute, it was pretty much either rushing that or doing the lottery for Rent. I was there a lot, and by myself constantly, and was so ashamed to be so into it, because of the "Altarholics" in the matching t-shirts who were always there and seemed to be stalking the guys. I was pulled onstage one week for "Something About You" and the next time I was there, not thinking about it, I went through to get my CD book signed (they did signings on Mondays, no idea if that's still the case) and they remembered me. From being there a lot. AND from their Barnes and Noble appearance that I stumbled into while buying textbooks. *sigh* I haven't been back.
On the note of being a fan of a person more so than a show....Adam Pascal. The first musical I saw on Broadway was Aida when I was 11. This, of course, meant I found myself intensely into Adam Pascal (I know, I know!). Years later, when I moved to the city for college, I went and saw it closing week when he was back in it. I was with a friend who likes to stage door (and loved Deborah Cox), so we waited outside and I ended up next to a girl COVERED in homemade Adam Pascal paraphernalia. When he came through to sign it, she kind of freaked him out (particularly because her mother waited across the street away from the barricades so she could tail him when he left), and I am pretty sure he thought I was with her and I died a little.
I find the fangirls for a lot of shows irritating, but really it's the people that get attached to certain actors that drive me nuts. That is a shout out to all you crazies who camped outside of Second Stage just in case Idina was there to see Taye on any given evening.
Gee...Taye Diggs isnt' enough of a thrill??? That man is HAWT!!

ditto on taye... haha...
i live outside NYC... so I'm able to admit my love for certain shows without fear of being labeled a fangirl. (i'm a bit older then most fangirls... but I'm afraid of being labeled as such often enough)
but when i talk to people who are fans of theater... i'm almost afraid to admit my affection to some shows/actors... amazingly enough... in this part of my life i'm actually sane... haha...
I really want to remind some people that actors are still human (shock, I know) and a show is just a show... will never last forever... that's why it's theater... it's here, now...

I'm amazed by the young girls who wait at stage doors discussing what clever thing they will say to an actor to get their attention. When the person finally comes out they yell:
"I love you _____ (insert actor's name). You were great."
Yea, that's clever, and I'm sure they've never heard it before.
Will definitely join in on the fandom, yet fear of fans for a lot of shows, but particularly Rent and Spring Awakening. And (just because the last time I saw it was Bailey's first or second week) to a certain extent Legally Blonde, just because those fangirls were annoyingly pink and sparkly.
And though I didn't even think of it until I read it here (not a show, or at least not YET lol) is Twilight. I love the novels (only on the third), actually enjoyed the film (though I do admit it was hardly perfect), but DESPISE the fans. I even wanted to wait a few months before seeing the movie just because I knew what I was getting myself into, but nooooo I had to be dragged by my sisters the day after Turkey Day. When I saw my fourth couple dressed up like Edward/Bella, I threw up a little. It's so interesting because with a play, you automatically can gage the level of fanwankery, but when it comes to a book (since it's more of a singular experience) you really can't tell. So I just had no idea what I was getting myself into.
I always get embarrassed by fans who dress as characters from the show and go out in public (except for halloween) especially if the costume either sucks big time or they are so not suited for the "part" as so many crazy fans are.
I remember seeing some Cats fans in London at the closing broadcast in Covert Garden all dressed up. The costumes were ok, but they just looked stupid.
And i remember some Phans in Toronto being told to stop coming to the show dressed as charaters.
I'm a fan of many shows, and you may be the most fanatic, but there is just something fundamentally sad about a fat chiick in greasy badly painted face paint showing up outside the Gershwin stage door.
Great thread, everyone...
I'll throw my hand in the air and say yep...I was a dyed in the leopard-print-wool Ozalot for a year (still to some lesser degree, not easy to shake someone like Jackman out of your system), but I was a fan of the show as a WHOLE, not just its glorious leading man.
Nowadays (no Chicago pun intended LOL), and this comes as no surprise to anyone who has been around BWW lately, I'm a "Rock of Ages" band-aid. Unabashedly so. HOWEVER, this doesn't come from 1) a crush on any one particular actor in the show or 2) some slightly off-kilter chromosome or lack of proper medication. LOL
I was a hair metal / pop rock fangirl in the 1980s and 90s' (and yeah, I still am) - this was MY era and MY music. To get to see some of my favorite songs of that period performed by some incredibly talented actors / singers / dancers? It is like the bands have come to town and decided to let the tour bus idle for a while and play an extended run of dates in concert...
Do I "dress up" in 80s' regalia for this show? Nope (well, Halloween was an exception because there was a costume contest). Am I in the cast members' faces for pictures, autographs, long conversations after each and every show I attend? Nope again.
Do I try to do my part by being a positive, upbeat, engaged audience member...singing along, laughing, clapping, holding up my lighter...helping first-time audience members with questions they might have about the show or the cast? Yep. Do I try and spread the word about the show and any events, promotions, news in a way that doesn't make me sound like a sycophant or a shill? Damned right I do - it is my way to give back to those guys and girls who bust their butts on that stage 8 shows a week and bring joy to every audience.
My name is Miss Lizzy...and I'm a fan, band aid, groupie, ozalot...and I'm damned proud of it.
But which version?! With or without the overtime cuts?
And in how many languages?

Rock of Ages for me. The groupies were out en masse and were very vocal. A whole row sitting directly behind me was singing EVERY SINGLE SONG (poorly, I might add) and giving them a dirty look did no good whatsoever. Plus, because they served drinks while the show was going on, a bunch of slobs really messed up the place -- had to crawl over a zillion plastic cups when leaving -- and some of them weren't even empty! Plus, many were dressed like they were at the Limelight -- I mean, these people looked like they were at a freak show. I'm okay with casual dress, but the show's supposed to be on stage. Do these weirdos think they're impressing anybody?

I'm never embarrassed to be a fan of a show. I am embarrassed by a person that SD's a certain show and doesn't even see it. I was there one night and someone in the show said to this person "did you see the show tonight?" Said person said "no". Person in show said "You never even see the show and you show up at stagedoor all the time". I found that to be really creepy and stalker-ish.

Gotta agree with this for the most part-- (I dont mind the dress that much) There are people staying FAR away from this show-(not to mention, numerous complaints to management), because of what is going on there.
Saddest thing I read about the show was from someone at the ATC boards that had such a bad experience, that him and his partner left.
If the drinking wasnt enough, there were a group of people that decided to make rude comments during one of the "kissing scenes" between two male cast members (being vague, as not to "spoil"- )
