I think Lin isn't a life changing actor or singer BUT neither was Dick Van Dyke. And Lin has what Dick has: more charisma than humanly possible. And that's what is needed for something like this. He should do great with this type of thing.

I'm so attached to the Julie Andrews original it's hard not to feel any follow up will be an encroachment on my childhood memories... But that's silly. The plot description doesn't sound bad, Lin-Manuel is a good fit for the Bert-esque role (doubly so if he makes no attempt at an appropriate British accent!), Emily Blunt is an inoffensive choice for Mary, I like Shaiman and Wittman, although Rob Marshall remains a troublesome choice for the director's chair.
I wonder who they'll cast as the grown up Jane and Michael? I wonder if we'll see any of the other members of the Banks family, I'm betting now that Mr. Banks will have kicked the bucket.

All in serious, I will keep an open mind for the Mary Poppins remake. The premise is promising, Blunt is the perfect Poppins, and Miranda is a huge plus. I just hope Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke are in the movie!

I'll keep an open mind and I LOVE Emily blunt but this could be risky. Mary poppins is a sacred classic to a lot of people and I honestly don't see the point of a sequel aside from Disneys money scheming ways. It could turn out to be great though.

it's actually a sequel, not a remake.
i'm pretty excited for this movie. I don't like that it won't be released for 2.5 years. I'm pretty sure it doesn't take that long to make a movie.

The description makes it sound pretty serious (more Oscar bait than crowd pleaser) but it's still a movie musical and Hollywood doesn't tend to make ones without mass appeal so maybe I'm just getting the wrong impression from the article.

It doesn't (usually), but its all in the release date strategy. You don't want to release it right when you finish it just because you can. Plus, we don't know when filming starts.

I still don't know how I feel about this project. I will reserve judgement until I actually SEE something of it.

Most of me is worried about this movie. Not crazy about either Lin or Blunt, nor that they're doing a sequel.

I'm also happy Lin is building a relationship with Disney because it means my dream of an Alan Menken/Lin Manuel Miranda (no Glenn Slater) musical isn't so outside the realm of possibility.

Yes, in a crazy competitive category that saw the likes of Ann Bancroft, Debbie Reynolds, Sophia Loren, and Kim Stanley all get nominated.

It makes no sense for Lin Miranda to be in any MARY POPPINS.
Kids don't really know him.

Kids aren't the ones paying for movie tickets, it's usually the parents that suggest they go see a particular family movie. It's also just not a logical point because most movies for kids are animated and kids aren't bothered that there wont be anyone they recognize. I think teenagers/adults are the people that are more likely to care who is in something when considering whether to go see a movie or not.

I wonder if the Tony voters have actually voted already? There is so much LMM backlash and backlash to the backlash. When a Tony vote is cast within the backlash cycle will figure heavily into how Hamilton does on June 12. The news of these two movies today will make the backlash cycle go even crazier

There is? I've hardly seen any.
Also, the same stuff was said before the Tony nominations came out and we all saw how that turned out.

Absolutely. And if you don't think Disney has had their eye on LMM for some time now, you're crazy. I'm sure when Hamilton was becoming the mega product it was becoming, even while it was still off Broadway, someone in Burbank was murmuring, 'So has anyone been tracking this LMM dude.....and this Hamilton thing?'
Disney has turned cash cow into an art form.
Gone are the days when Walt saw money as his way to keep bringing his brand to families and children. Sure, I have no doubt he loved the accoutrements that it brought to him and his family as well, but Walt was just different. He saw money in other ways too.
The Disney of today sees money as strictly stockholder and exclusively executive.
LMM is hip. He's edgy. He's super talented. And he's the toast of Broadway. With Disney having stuck their nose into Broadway the way they have over the last two decades or so, it comes as no surprise they'd go after the cool and progressive LMM. Hitching their wagon to the rising, cool star is one part of Disney's MO nowadays.
And it would come as zero surprise if they're looking and thinking Hamilton someday.
The question will be, does LMM give them the prize?
