Maybe JUST a tad over the fence HH -I/we get where you stand on stage dooring--some do, you and I don't, so let's leave those who do enjoy it for whatever reason, do it.
Think too many do's and don'ts and o's in that sentence.

You bring up a good point, FishermanBob. I don't know the answer to that since that hasn't happened to me, but I (or anyone else) would probably be less likely to wait.

I understand your frustration, HogansHero. Are you a Broadway actor who has to deal with crowded stage doors on a daily basis? If so, I understand it even more. For the record, I don't "stage-door" all the time...in fact, I can count the times on one hand and have fingers left over. But, as you so eloquently put it, one time is one time too many! Perhaps I will change my ways.

@Sweet-over the top, fence or whatever, yes indeed. Let them do what they enjoy without being called on it? No way; it is loathsome and they need to know it.

@cknick-not an actor, but co-workers and friends who are, and whose nights are routinely spoiled by the gauntlet of ego-centric self-entitled freaks. No matter how gracious they may act.

@LightsOut-speak for yourself. And yes your comment is demonstrative of the pathology I am talking about. Perhaps you can chase Justin Bieber down the street somewhere. We don't want your kind in the theatre district.

Even so, HogansHero, you should not lump people into one large category. There are exceptions to every rule whether you believe it or not. And at the end of the day, it's those "ego-centric self-entitled freaks" that buy tickets to keep your co-workers and friends employed. And I know, their ticket only guarantees them a performance. After that, the actor's job is done.

"And at the end of the day, it's those "ego-centric self-entitled freaks" that buy tickets to keep your co-workers and friends employed"

I'd say only a small fraction of people stage door. Even when you see 100+ people waiting for Hedwig, etc., 90+% of the crowd didn't bother...

"But Emma stone was great in the show. Go see it people!"

If I had thought ahead, I'd've seen it on Friday. I saw Patti Lupone at 54 Below at 7p, and she wrapped up at like 8:10-8:15. I quickly dashed upstairs, wondering if I could still get a rush ticket for Cabaret, but they said no. I should have got one before Patti, then they would have seated me and I'd've only missed like 8 minutes. Oh well... one of these days. Emma Stone Stage Door

cknick-I agree everyone cannot be lumped together and that there are exceptions to every rule. There are unquestionably people who would very politely and unpresumptuously attempt to get an autograph. But that's not the dynamic at the stage door of these shows with celebrities. It's a bunch of crazies, people who think its cool to make a living selling autographs on Ebay and people who possess an offensive sense of entitlement to a piece of another human being because they bought an expensive ticket to see them in a show. The polite, unpresumptuous folk that are the exception to the rule have two options: turn into a freak or end up at the back of the pack (somewhere in the vicinity of 9th Avenue). So unfortunately there is no way not to be a loathsome creature at one of these celebrity stage doors. Sorry this doesn't sit well with some people here but them's the facts. That said, go see Emma: she's worth it. (Then, go have a nice dinner.)

I think Hogan may be a bit harsh with their description of those who wait at the stage door, but I don't disagree that it's a bit of a starstruck thing and not necessary in order to show appreciation. That's what curtain calls are for!

The only time I approach a stage door after a performance is when I actually know someone in the show and they know I'm there.

With that said, I do think that a nicely written note left at the stage door for an actor to receive when you're not waiting there for them can be quite appreciated.

Stage dooring is loathesome? Many actors actually enjoy coming out and interacting with their fanbase.

Feste-I cop to harsh. Sometimes harsh is what's needed to make a point and I think the apparently cluelessness of some to the offensiveness of their behavior makes this one of those occasions.

You'd go to a show knowing you were going to be late? That's.... disappointing and pretty rude.

I never stage-doored, no time, felt foolish, but I've recently turned a young friend onto theater and he cannot wait to get to that stage door after a show. To see close up stars that he has only seen from afar is a thrill and now part of his theater going experience. He tweets, instagrams, and face books the encounters which only helps the publicity cause of the show and furthers that stars web hits numbers. It's a tradition that serves all and actors should do it as often as they physically can.

Up in One- celebrity actors do not do theatre for publicity any more than they do it for the money. You can get more social media hits off 7 seconds on ET than from 3 months on Broadway.

Why is okay for celebrities, after a show, to breeze backstage and straight into the actor's dressing room, expecting the actor to entertain them and their cohorts?

"I think the apparently cluelessness of some to the offensiveness of their behavior". Uh, H.H., this could apply to you as well. There seems to be a bitter undertone to your posts. If people want to stage door and they're not obnoxious about it, more power to them. Ultimately, the performers are the ones who ultimately decide if they want to stage door...or not.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

God, how annoying. Social media doesn't make or break a show on Broadway, this ain't Scandal. He does that solely to feel special. How do you know it serves all actors? That can't be true since a lot if actors do not stage door, and I really doubt it improves a shows numbers.

@Jay Lerner-celebrities do not "breeze" backstage; they are invited back, as are many non-celebrity friends. Surely you understand the distinction.

@Patti-"and they're not obnoxious about it." That's the key. There is no way to be at the stage door getting an autograph or a selfie of/with a celebrity without being obnoxious. As I said elsewhere, if you are polite, you'll be nowhere near the barrier, because you will have been shoved out of the way. I am not bitter; I am just astounded by the loathsome behavior I have witnessed at stage doors. And the only thing I believe I have done that could be viewed as offensive is call out the freaks who ought to know better.

@Sutton-you're right, of course. As has been rehearsed here and elsewhere many times, stagedooring is only justified by the egocentric pathology of those engaged in it. It is (with rare exception) NOT sought nor appreciated. In fact, it is no less loathsome than the paparazzi.

Personally, when I get out of work, I just want to go home or maybe go have a drink. There are many Broadway performers who are far more generous with their time and personal space than I would be in their shoes.
