Equus Stage Door Question......
#1Equus Stage Door Question......
Posted: 9/30/08 at 8:42amI have a ticket for an onstage seat for the 2:00 o clock show tommorow and a front row seat for the eleventh at 2:00. By any chance, if I get to the theatre early, do you think Dan and Richard would sign an autograph before the show?

I have read on this board somewhere that the stage door security asks that they not be approached for autographs as they enter for the show...
and just as and FYI.. and I do understand that it is hard to get their autographs after a 2:00 show because often they just stay in their dressing rooms and rest for the evening show..... it is generally bad form to approach an actor for an autograph as they enter the theater to prepare for the show. Just like us they are rushing on their way to work and have to be signed in and ready to go by a certain time. They usually do not have the time to stop and chit chat as they are on their way in. Just think of how frustrating it would be for you if you were standing right outside the door to your office/school knowing that your boss/teacher expected you in at a set time and then someone comes up and tries to draw you into a conversation when you know you need to go.
You will have much better luck and receive a better reception from them if you wait until after the show. Dan and Richard both understand that their fans would like to see them and they very well may stop outside briefly after the mat to sign some playbills.
Hope that helps! Enjoy the show!

Posted: 9/30/08 at 11:27amAs Eponine said, his body guard won't let him sign before the show. He'll say a quick hello and head inside. The rest of the cast tends to sign before the show, but it's always easier to simply wait until after. And, unfortunately, they don't come out between shows on two show days.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 11:34amThey don't come out on two show days, but the person at the stagedoor was VERY nice to my friends and I when we spoke to him. He told us if we came back later that night, we'd be able to show our tickets from the afternoon and still be able to get into the barricades so the cast could sign for us. None of us were able to stay in the city so late, but I think it's very nice of them to offer that option.

It all varies on the theatre AND the actors themselves.
I stood outside of the Shaftesbury Theatre in London for like an hour and a half BEFORE the show for Michael Ball. The company manager even called him to see where he was and even the security guard took the picture!
Now, I saw Equus like 2 weeks ago and they have to put up the barricades because the teenyboppers, who haven't even seen the show, were standing there to get HIS autograph.

I once stood outside the Gershwin theatre stage door just talking to 2 friends I met up with from London and Lindsay Northen and Julie Reiber scared the bejesus out of me when they walked up to me to say hello. I had my back towards the stage door so I couldn't see who was going in....LOL.
As for the question I have no clue since I have no plans on seeing the show or ever stage dooring it.

Have people been bringing Harry Potter related things to get signed?
Just asking, I don't know how stage door was regarded in London for Equus, but bringing non show memorabilia was frowned upon and banned at the RSC performances of Hamlet for both David Tennant fans (Doctor Who) and Patrick Stewart fans (Star Trek). Only Hamlet programs and playbills were allowed, no word on if its the same regards to the London run that is coming up.
was just wondering if it has happened/will happen here, especially if Radcliffe gets mobbed by fangirls not seeing the show.
not planning on seeing the show, was just amused at the stage door mobs

Only Equus-related stuff was allowed at the stage door in London, similar to the restrictions the RSC placed on the Hamlet stage door.

Sadly, I'm sure people DO bring HP DVDs, shirts, posters etc which I don't think that's right either. The kid is Alan, not Harry, but he certainly does not want to be a jerk with the fans, and I don't blame him.
I, personally, would not take an Elphaba t-shirt to Idina doing a Rent tribute or something.

If I showed up wearing a HP shirt and asked him to sign it, I dare them to tell me to take it off because Daniel won't sign anything non-Equus.
Actually, I may try that...hmm

Posted: 10/1/08 at 12:35amDefyingGravity777, I waited an hour in the pouring rain for Stephanie. Lindsey kept walking out to get food and stuff and every time she would look at me, smile, wave, laugh and walk by. After the show she glanced at me, laughed and said a friendly "HI!". Although, my hour paid off. I got a picture with Stephanie... under umbrellas.

Posted: 10/1/08 at 12:44amTonight, they checked tickets to let people into the people who saw the show side of the barricades, and even drew a little mark on each ticket to make sure it couldn't be reused. Daniel and Richard were very nice and I think the people on the tickets side only had them sign playbills, but I saw people on the other side with loads of Harry Potter pictures. I'm pretty sure Daniel skipped most of them though.

Posted: 10/1/08 at 2:39amI was leaving Gypsy on Saturday and hung around to watch the craziness that is the Equus stagedoor, and people (I think on the non-show side) not only had Harry Potter DVDs and posters, but some people even had books. I feel like that's the most pointless thing ever, he has nothing to do with the books. I couldn't tell if he was signing the HP stuff or not.

You have every right to think it's "pointless," but, and this is coming from a huge Harry Potter fan, Daniel does have alot to do with the books and their draw.
A lot of people saw the first film before they began reading the books, as HP didn't become a mainstream success until 2001 (when the 4th book and 1st film came out). So, a lot of people have always pictured Daniel as the one-and-only Harry Potter and that means a lot to people who love his story.
Equus is a Broadway play to some, but to MANY others, Daniel's presence on American soil means a WHOLE lot more than any play ever could. He is, and always will be, part of the Harry Potter phenom, and it makes perfect sense that HP fans will want to catch a glimpse of him at the stage door.
Plus, I think meeting Daniel will mean a lot more to a Harry Potter fan than it will to your average theatre-goer.

Yeah, um, ok... so I'm gonna sport HP, shirt, bra, pants and chonies and will HAVE to go home naked! LOL... hahaha... ROFL...
Ok, I'm with that one and Fosse, I'm glad to hear that coz he is not flying on a broomstick in that show! Celebrities are a great initiative to get individuals to see shows, movies etc but my God, this guys got talent and can portray different roles!

They do give out a playbill (before the show to most, after the show if you have stage seats), but no separate Equus-only programs. The playbills they give out have a nice Equus section, but also adverts for other Broadway productions.
As for what Dan will/won't sign, I know in London, he only signed Equus-related stuff or autograph books. Not sure about the "rules" here, but having seen the play, I think it would be rather an insult to his effort in Equus to ask him to sign something from Potter (or one of his other films). That's not because I wouldn't LOVE for him to sign one of my Potter books (I'm a huge fan of the books and films), but it just seems respectful to me to be supporting the CURRENT work if you're asking him to sign something for you.

Posted: 10/7/08 at 4:59pmI read somewhere that they separate the people with show related things from those who are there for Potter related things. A friend of mine is going tonight. Looked for the thread about his grandmother's death to see if he went back for it. Does anyone know if he did or if he is in NYC and will be on tonight? I told my friend to call the theater.
