I'm reminded of a previously-posted, classic comment:
He's up there doing his gay, Jewish-boy act.

The Band’sVisit has wins in Best Musical and Katrina for Best Actress locked in.
Spongebob will be loaded with noms also, and they have a legit chance to walk away with Best Actor depending on how Joshua Henry is."
Nothing is "locked in".

i agree with carolinaguy not to count Norbert Leo Butz out of the running. I think they'll push for both Doolitle & Higgins roles for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

This would only hurt their chances though, no?

He may or may not be the front runner, but if anyone said even 2 months ago that Spongebob would actually be considered more then a tourist trap money grab, and that the cast is getting buzz, as well, I think most of us would of called them crazy.
The fact that Riedel mentioned Slater as possible lead for a Barnum revival if Hugh Jackman isn't interested is honestly all the buzz I'd need if I were Slater.
Honestly though this makes me feel bad for Brian Darcy James, whose performance in Shrek, was one for the ages but was swept under the rug in favor of the rotating Billies.

Though I think George Rose winning Lead Actor as Alfred P. Doolittle in 1976 really had to have been a question of billing. He was apparently billed above the title. I think LCT should let Hadden-Paton and Butz both compete in separate categories.
Then again, this is currently a slow year for the category of Lead Actor in a Musical with only five candidates (or six if Isaac Powell ends up going Lead for Once on This Island). I wonder if we might run into a similar situation we had back in 2011 where there only six potential candidates for Lead Actress in a Musical, so that category ended up having four nominees.

I would put Butz in supporting so he can win easily.
With all these juxebox musicals and "theme park shows" - the acting categories are really going to be pretty boring this year. I'm hoping My Fair Lady and Carousel bring us some actually GREAT, nomination worthy performances.

A little off-topic, but am I the only one who thinks Ari'el Stachel could be a dark horse in the supporting actor category? He's getting some great buzz from The Band's Visit.

Stachel is sensational and I hope (and think) he'll get a Featured Actor nomination. He's glorious.

Good point! Also, would Bruce Springsteen be eligible to be nominated in this category?

I am already thinking that the Tony's are going to be boring this year. I can never remember around when we stop hearing about late entries, but there are very few things I really want to see, which is rare. No interest in Iceman (I really believe that it works best reading the script -- I have never seen a production that didn't bore me to death (I didn't see the Nathan Lane production), and have to admit that I am going to skip seeing Angels live, because I only saw it a few years ago. Plus sacrilege, I find it hard to get through Perestroika without frequently being reminded how miserable I am 'in that uncomfortable seat in that cramped row'. So, I'll see it in a movie theater with reclining seats for $20, and forego the truly live experience. The only things right now that seem like must sees to me are 3 Tall Women, MFL, Carousel. I would see Harry Potter, but I didn't make the cut; I have great seats for Frozen, but am totally ambivalent at this point. At least we stand to have numbers from revivals of some great shows from the past.
